KRATIE, (CEN) - Eight gold mine workers were missing Friday after an explosion at a mine in Sambor district in Kratie province operated by a Chinese company identified as Sin Yan, police said.

The police said a preliminary report found that an explosion that took place at a depth of 150 meters in one mineshaft on Friday morning caused water to flow into another shaft where nine workers were located at a depth of 200 meters.

Hang Chhoeun, a police inspector in Sambor district, said eight of the nine workers had not been found as of Friday afternoon.

Kratie Provincial Police Commissioner Chreng Phally said the Chinese company used an inappropriate technique in the explosion. “It was completely wrong,” he said. Read article in Khmer at DAP News.

This Chinese company must be fined severely for failing to observe safety procedures. It also must compensate the victims' family properly. Chinese mining companies have poor safety records and thousands of Chinese miners in China died every year.
