Eight hundred newly-recruited soldiers for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and their families gathered at Olympic Stadium yesterday morning for an official ceremony marking their departure from the capital for military training in Kampong Speu and Oddar Meanchey provinces.
The ceremony was presided over by Commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces in Phnom Penh, General Prum Din, and Phnom Penh municipal governor Kep Chuktema.
“To protect our land we must have a strong army. To have a strong army we must have brave youth. To have a brave youth we must have volunteers and training,” Kep Chuktema said.
General Prum Din told those gathered that 500 soldiers would be sent to the Pich Nil military base in Kampong Speu province and the remaining 300 would go to Oddar Meanchey province’s Trapaing Prasat district to receive training from senior RCAF soldiers.
Both groups, he added, were being sent to replace soldiers who had retired, become disabled or died.
RCAF soldier Heng Chansophal, 20, from Chamkarmon district, said he had decided to join the military because he had always wanted to be a soldier.

Heng Chansophal’s uncle, 44-year-old Nuth Sovann, said he was happy to see his nephew become a soldier.
“It is [Chansophal’s] right to be a soldier because his father used to be a soldier. Many of my relatives are in the military so it is alright with us that he is a soldier,” he said.

It was a wake up called for cambodian government not updating our Military, our troop has poor military equipped, lacking of weapons and Military schooling- Military training, Thailand invasion was a surprise attack, and also a woke up called on cambodian government's careless on our troops...We need to be well prepared from now on, don't under estimate our enemy again!
The Cambodian government also needs to recruit beautiful Khmer girls and let them compete in Miss.Universe. First they need to start a Miss.Cambodia contest.
Cambodian govt should recruit those drug eddicted people in jail, those people can become cambodian special force plus the jail has too many people right now...over crowded! I wish they turn these people into navy seal or sepcial force...don't waste food and money for nothing...
correction=special force
This is great start; Cambodia should be very selective with their arm force. It should be based on qualification both physically and mentally. You can't have drug addict or thug in the arm force with guns running around. Although, opportunity should offer to them but not everybody can be good soldiers. Not every body can qualify for arm force; it should honor to be picked as Cambodian arm force. Cambodia should focus on quality not quantity.
This action of the Gov. is senseless , they should send all these People who join the army to study , or something others in the Educated Way.
Cambodia don't need Soldiers we need well educated people.
There is no need for soldiers all we need is beautiful Khmer girls to compete in Miss.Universe or Cambodia will be unknown forever to the whole world.
Cambodia also need to recruit gaymen...don't let them waste time walking around ailing be de...
