Cambodia is on a new army recruitment drive

The 800 new recruits were farewelled by family members and the general public.

In May, the Cambodian government has announced that Cambodia needs to recruit about 5,000 new army personnel to replace the new army personnel who are at retirement age.

Yesterday, the Phnom Penh City Hall authority has sent 800 new army recruits for training in Kampong Speu, Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces.

3000 people have attended the farewell ceremony at Olympic Stadium on Monday under the auspices of Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema, who is also a personal advisor to Prime Minister Hun Sen.

During a farewell speech, Kep Chuktema commended and admired the courage of the new recruits who have given up a life of luxury and leaving family to serve the nation. "We have troops who are brave in the defence of our territory. This is the bravery and the highest obligations of our men and women of Cambodia", he said.

Lt-Gen. Prum Din, commander of the Third Military Region, said the government has so far met the target of 5,000 recruitment. "I would like to thank the families of the volunteers who have seen the causes for for the defence of our nation, encourage them, giving them up and urging their husbands and sons and grandchildren to serve the national army to defend our motherland", he said.

Twenty-two year-old San Samedi, one of the 800 new recruits who was a former garment worker in Phnom Penh, said his family had approved of his decision to join the army. "Yes, I am very happy to be joining the army to defend our territorial integrity. I will strive hard to train 100% for our territorial integrity", he said.

On 19th of May 2011, Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that Cambodia needs to recruit 5,000 new army personnel to replace the old soldiers who reach the retirement age. Among the 5,000 new recruits, 3000 are intended for the 2nd Division of the Intervention Force, 1000 for the 41st Brigade and 1000 for the 42nd Brigade of the Intervention Force.

Other than this, the Defence Ministry had recruited another 350 people for the Bodyguard Unit of the Army Command.

Cambodia still has very poor military equipped and military shooling beside economy...Thailand and Vietnam are way ahead..
