The leader of the minor opposition Human Rights Party (HRP), Mr. Kem Sokha, has claimed during a public address during the party's congress that he had been threatened after he refused to switch side to join the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP).
Speaking to about 500 party members during the congress on Saturday 30th July, Mr. Kem Sokha, president of HRP, said that he had been coerced to support the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen, but when he refused he was threatened.
Mr. Kem Sokha's sensational claim was made after Prime Minister Hun Sen released the so-called 2007 secret telephone conversation between himself and Mr. Kem Sokha in late May. The conversation between the pair, which seemed very innocent, but was very patronising on the party of Mr. Hun Sen, covered general issues, but they both have strongly criticized Mr. Sam Rainsy's style of leadership.
However, Mr. Kem Sokha claimed that he was coerced and threatened after he refused to side with the government. Without naming who threatened him, he said: "Some dishonest politicians who are trying to coerce and buy out other politicians have threatened me in all forms to buy me out, but when I refused to sell out, they threatened me. I am not scared and I will continue with my (clear) conscience steadfastly based on the principles of national interests and people's interests as the priority. That's why these people used all sorts of cheap tricks to label me and smear the HRP", he said.
Mr. Kem Sokha had indirectly criticized the leadership of the SRP, saying that they have no genuine willingness to join hand with other democratic forces. "Some politicians, who are very recalcitrant, who did not respect the will of the people and who did not want their party to unite with the HRP and have tried very hard to avoid (the unity), have turned around and used the same "divide and conquer" strategy that the dictators have used", he said.
Despite his harsh words against the SRP, Mr. Kem Sokha still hopes to one day unite his HRP with the SRP to form a strong opposition.
Mr. Son Soubert, president of the HRP's steering committee who is also the son of former prime minister and leader of the anti-Vietnamese resistance movement, Mr. Son Sann, said the unity of all democratic forces is the only the key to defeating the ruling CPP and future electoral successes.

ការថ្លែងបែបនេះរបស់លោក កឹម សុខា គឺបន្ទាប់ពីមានការប្រើប្រាស់វោហារស័ព្ទដោយនាយករដ្ឋមន្រ្តីខ្មែរ រួមទាំងមានការទម្លាយឯកសារសម្លេងទាក់ទងគ្នារតាមទូរស័ព្ទវាងលោក កឹម សុខា និង ហ៊ុន សែន ជាសាធារណៈ ដែលថា លោក កឹម សុខា បានស្នើយោបល់ខ្លួន ក្នុងការបង្កើតគណបក្សសិទ្ធិមនុស្ស។
ជាមួយគ្នាមេដឹកនាំគណបក្សប្រឆាំង លំដាប់ទី២នៅក្នុងប្រទេសកម្ពុជារូបនេះ ក៏បានធ្វើការវាយប្រហារបែបបញ្ឆិតបញ្ឆៀងផងដែរ ដែលគេដឹងថា សំដៅទៅរកគណបក្សសមរង្ស៊ីពីការដែលគណបក្សប្រឆាំងធំមួយនេះពុំបានបង្ហាញឲ្យឃើញពីឆន្ទះក្នុងការច្របាច់បញ្ចូលគ្នាជាមួយគណបក្សសិទ្ធិមនុស្ស ឲ្យក្លាយទៅជាគណបក្សប្រជាធិបតេយ្យខ្លាំងតែមួយនោះ។
លោក កឹម សុខា បានលើកឡើងដូច្នេះថា”អ្នកនយោបាយខ្លះ ដែលមានចិត្តមានៈ ដែលមិនគោរពតាមឆន្ទៈរបស់ប្រជាពលរដ្ឋខ្មែរ ដែលមិនចង់ឲ្យគណបក្សខ្លួនរួបរួមជាមួយគណបក្សសិទ្ធិមនុស្សខំយកឡេះគេចវេស បែរជាទទួលធ្វើតាមយុទ្ធសាស្រ្ត បំបែកបំបាក់ដើម្បីត្រួតត្រារបស់ជនផ្ដាច់ការ”។
ប៉ុន្តែយ៉ាងណាក៏ដោយ ដើម្បីធ្វើឲ្យកម្ពុជា ក្លាយជាប្រទេសប្រជាធិបតេយ្យត្រឹមត្រូវគណបក្សនេះនូវតែមើលឃើញពីភាពចាំបាច់នៃការធ្វើសមាហរណកម្មបញ្ចូលគ្នាជាមួយគណបក្សនានាដែលមិនមានប្រវត្តិជាបក្សកុម្មុយនិស្ត។

HRP is not the party that was created PM Hun Sen to destroy other democracy lover. Khem Sokha is telling the truth. This group is for real. I don't belong to this group or work for HRP. However, I can assess from the its leadership. Son Soubert is the name can be trusted. He has principle and stands behind Khmer people. Son Soubert's father fought for Khmer until his last breath and he will never let his father spirit down. Those of you that has doubt about this party, I don't think you should. The question, can SRP or will SRP willing to merge into one party for upcoming election? HRP alone cannot defeat CPP. The party is too strong for any one party to compete. I would love to see debate on policy between SRP, HRP and CPP in the future.
I agree with the comment above. Many analysis speculated that HRP was a party created to destroy SRP. Many speculated that PM Hun Sen created the party making deal behind close door with party leader Khem Sokha. I doubt that any of those speculation is true; the matter of fact; I think HRP is a threat to both SRP and CPP. I listened to the so call tape leaked by PM Hun Sen. I dont belongs to HRP or gaining any browny point by writing good comment about the party but I like to help cleared out the fact. Sometime, I wonder if PM Hun Sen created HRP to destroy SRP, why would he leaked the information? What was the purpose to leak the information? Who would benefit from it? Why HRP is a threat to CPP if it only won 3 seats in the parliament. Dont forget, PM Hun Sen is a natural born political genius. He knows competitor when he sees one and he can predicted the outcome of political leaders. Opposition probably disagree with me 100% that PM Hun Sen is a genius when it comes to political. Let face it, he was in power for over 30 years is no coincident. How many leaders can hold on to power that long especially in Cambodia. King Sihanouk cannot match PM Hun Sen record in power. We are talking about the king, supposedly god reincarnated as human form according to ancient beleif. Why did I think HRP is a potential and possibly threat to CPP? Let looks at the leadership of this party. The two distintive figures are Son Soubert and Pen Sovann. Many thought Pen Sovann is washed up but I doubt it is true. This man was a Prime Minister before PM Hun Sen and schooled by the Vietnamese. Techinically his skills are competible with PM Hun Sen or more with his western education. Son Soubert, he dedicated his entire life for the Khmer causes. He refused to be married rather use all his money and salary he earned to raise over 300 orphanage children. His father, every body knows Somdech Son Sann. Former Prime Minister Son Sann, who dedicated his entire life for Khmer causes. Son Soubert will not shame his father name or sell his reputation either. These two figure heads leader gave credibility to the HRP parties and other leaders in the high ranking. Why would they join HRP instead of SRP. Son Soubert and former Sen. Thach Setha is very close with each other to fight for Khmer causes. They used to support SRP in the past but the evidence is very clear where they are standing. Thach Setha is very close to Son Chay and other leader within SRP, it is interesting to see many of them are supporting HRP. Do you really think PM Hun Sen afraid SRP, I dont think so. The real threat is HRP if you look at it closely. The position that Khem Sokha took to change leadership to through election is the correct choice while Sam Rainsy taking more redical approach. People need to ask this question, why CPP released the tape if HRP working for PM Hun Sen? Why would you wanted to exposed your undercover? It is less likely that HRP working for CPP rather it is real threat to CPP. The real question, could HRP beat CPP this election? I strongly doubt it but HRP will become stronger day by day. Don't forget PM Hun Sen is not ordinary politician like SRP claimed or name calling him. SRP doesn't know how smart PM Hun Sen is but Khem Sokha knows how crafty the CPP political machine. Watch out the next election, you will see HRP gaining it support more and more.
