Venerable Monk Loun Sovath responds to threats in Cambodia

Thanks to Ryan Schlief for providing this link.

On April 26, Buddhist Supreme Patriarch Non Nget banned Venerable Loun Sovath from all pagodas in Phnom Penh on the grounds that these actions "[had] caused villagers to think badly about Buddhism." This was the latest threat by Buddhist authorities against Venerable Loun Sovath, a monk who decided to actively defend the rights of Cambodians.

Since 2009, Venerable Sovath has supported communities forcibly evicted from their land. In the video, he explains that his actions are in line with Buddhist teachings that advocate helping and saving people's lives. Buddha, he says, would also go where there is misery.

Conscious of the immense gravity of the situation -- over a quarter of a million people in Cambodia have been affected by land disputes -- Venerable Sovath refuses to stay quiet. He believes it is an individual duty to support these communities in their struggle.

Have you ever seen RFA put out any good news from Cambodia? Dont get me wrong; the monk is fighting for Khmer and it is good thing. This monk is practicing what he preaches. RFA usually has slanted news to polarize the government.

Please try to help the Monk out of Cambodia. I will help to donate some money. This issue is not about Hun Sen government. It is about Vietnamese try to kill many Khmers as they could.

I support what the monk is doing. I hope he doesnt get use as tool against the government for political gain of Sam Rainsy. He probably can help more if he doesnt get uses by the Sam Rainsy party. There are many good Cambodian that like to help but they all fall into Sam Rainsy propaganda then it becomes political.

2:49 PM, yes I support your initiative. If someone try to get him out, I will donate some money to help get him out as well. He is a young monk, but his conscience is very clear, he helps the victims. He is practicing what the Buddha had taught: helping the victims and the poor.
