After what appears to be a big internal split recently stemming from corruption charges and plot of a party coup d'etat, Funcinpec leaders have put up a brave face and amicably agreed to postpone a party congress from 21st March to 2 May 2011.
Mr. Lu Laysreng (pictured), First Vice-President of Funcinpec Party, said that during a meeting of the party Permanent Committee on 26th February, his faction (including party President Keo Put Rasmy and Second Vice-President Prince Sisowath Sirirath) and faction controlled by Party Scretary General Nhiek Bunchhay have agreed to ease the tension and postponed the party congress to 2nd May. "Because we have signed a letter asking for the party congress scheduled for 21st March to be delayed to a later date, so it is appropriate. When we met we agreed with each other, there is no problem, no party coup d'etat, all of us have agreed to do like that", he said.
Recently the royalist party had suffered a serious internal split after allegations that Party Secretary General Nhiek Bunchhay had mismanaged and embezzled party fund and planned to topple Party President Keo Put Rasmy in a party coup d'etat during the special party congress on 21st March. Mr. Keo Put Rasmy said he was elected to serve for a 5 year term and still has another 7 month of his term left.
Mr. Nhiek Bunchhay, however, did not make it clear whether he will run for the party presidency on the re-scheduled party congress on 2nd May. "The party structures that need to be reformed include the legislative and the executive (branch of the party), so we don't know who will stand as candidates, but in principles we have made a good compromise with each other", he said.
