The military situations near Preah Vihear temple remain very tense despite both Cambodian and Thai military leaders signed a ceasefire agreement in a meeting yesterday, including an agreement on the moratorium on the building of roads to the Sombok Khmum area.

Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodian Deputy Commander-in-Chief, said the renewed tension was caused by a Thai demand that Cambodia dismantle Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak and Cambodia stop building a road to Pram Makara (5th January) Point, stop building all roads to Preah Vihear temple and evict all Cambodian villagers living in the temple surrounding areas, which are all located in Cambodian territory. On the other hand, the Thai side is still continuing to build a road toward Sombok Khmum area and Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak, the issue that triggered the fighting on Friday and Saturday, despite a moratorium agreement reached in a meeting yesterday.

The casualty

Cambodian military sources claimed that during the two days of fighting, 24 Thai soldiers were killed (the figure has now been revised to 33 Thais killed), 5 were captured, many more were injured, the Thai Red House was significantly damaged, one Thai market (Muay Deng Market) was completely burned down, most Thai front line and back line positions and military camps had been destroyed, 2 Thai tanks destroyed and 4 Thai construction bulldozers and excavators building a road toward Sombok Khmum area have been destroyed.

On the Cambodian side, Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak pagoda, the nearby military positions and camps and Preah Vihear temple had suffered significant damages. On top of these, 24 Cambodian troops sustained injuries, 2 killed, one from the 9th Battalion and the other one is a photographer. Villagers from Sa Em, Svay Chroum and Dejo Hun Sen villages had been evacuated due to Thai artillery shells.

These claims have not been verified and have varied significantly from various sources. International media reported that only 2 Cambodians and 2 Thais were killed.

However, both sides had stepped up their media campaign by inflating the numbers of casualties of the other's side. Cambodian sources claimed that up to 32 Thais had been killed and the Thai side claimed that between 50-64 Cambodian soldiers were killed.
