Prince Norodom Ranariddh, former prime minister and current advisor to the king, is set for a showdown with Prime Minister Hun Sen for not backing down from his decision to return to politics, despite a strong warning from Prime Minister Hun Sen that his re-entry to politics will tarnish the image of the king and the monarchy.

On Thursday morning, Prime Minister bitterly attacked his once political bedfellow and political rival, threatening to sack him as advisor to the king if he did not back down from his decision for a political comeback. However, on the afternoon of the same day, Mr. Pen Sangha, spokesman for the Nationalist Party, which will be renamed the Norodom Ranariddh Party at the party's congress on Saturday, said the party will nominate and vote to appoint Prince Ranariddh as president of the renamed Norodom Ranariddh Party on Saturday 11th December as planned, adding that the prince had agreed with the party's nomination.

Mr. Hun Sen had released a statement on Wednesday to dispel the rumours which were milling around that he had given the green light to Prince Ranariddh to return to politics after the prince had sought his advice/permission through an intermediary TV anchorman Soy Sopheap. However, Mr. Pen Sangha said the party had never heard of such rumours, saying they had only heard of the rumours on Wednesday and Thursday (8th and 9th December) after Mr. Hun Sen had released the statement. Mr. Hun Sen had also released Prince Ranariddh's letter which thanked him for giving advice (permission) to the prince about his political rebirth, which Mr. Hun Sen said was a misunderstanding on the part of Prince Ranariddh about his expressed advice.

Mr. Pen Sangha said the rumours will not affect and impact on the upcoming party's congress and the prince's decision for his political resurrection.
