Prime Minister Hun Sen seemed to have played a major role in Prince Ranariddh's decision to return to politics. However, he seemed to be both a key and a hurdle to Prince Ranariddh's political resurrection.
In a statement released yesterday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said he had neither opposed nor given a green light to Prince Ranariddh (pictured) to return to politics after the prince sought Mr. Hun Sen's advice (permission), through an intermediary TV anchorman Soy Sopheap, about his return to politics. However, he had given his strong displeasure to Prince Ranariddh's return to politics by firing a strong warning to all Funcinpec officials not to defect to Prince Ranariddh party or they will be sacked from their positions within the government.
Mr. Hun Sen's warning came after Prince Ranariddh had called on all Funcinpec officials to defect to his party after rumours milling around that all Funcinpec officials who defected to his party will still retain their positions. Mr. Hun Sen also dispelled rumours that he will form a tripartite coalition government with Funcinpec and the Norodom Ranariddh Party as his coalition partners. "I will not form a tripartite coalition government of Cambodian People's Party-Funcinpect-Norodom Ranariddh Party. And those who leave the Funcinpec Party to join with other parties will be sacked from their positions", Mr. Hun Sen said through the statement.
Prince Ranarridh has been campaigning actively for his political comeback recently. But Mr. Hun Sen's latest statement seemed to be a strong displeasure and an indirect disendorsement of his return to politics. With such a statement from Mr. Hun Sen, the fate of Prince Ranariddh's political comeback seemed to have been sealed.
