Cambodian and Thai troops dined together at the hotly contested Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvara Pagoda under the auspices of the Cambodian Buddhist Patriarch Tep Vong more than 2 years after Thailand sent troops to occupy the pagoda. Also joining the lunch were Cambodian Deputy Commander-in-Chief Gen. Chea Dara and Gen. Srey Doek, commander of the Preah Vihear Command.
During the Cambodian Pchum Ben Ancestors Festival on Sunday 3rd October, the Cambodian had invited 30 Thai border troops from the nearby Sambok Khmum frontline for lunch when also 30 Cambodian troops had also dined at the temple.
On the Thai side was led by Maj. Surakit Kalnet, commander of the Thai 23rd Border Ranger Division. Maj. Surakit had thanked Patriarch Tep Vong for the invitation. Both sides of the troops had celebrated the Pchum Ben together at the pagoda.
The joint lunch happened after two grenades had exploded at the frontline at Phnom Trop, 5 kilometres from Preah Vihear. Cambodian troops accused Thai troops of throwing the grenades at them, but the Thais counter-accused that it was the Cambodian troops who threw the grenades at them. However, the Thai side have since apologised over the matter after the Cambodian had warned that the Thai side had broken an agreement about a show of restraint.
According to Cambodian Express News, Gen. Chea Dara gave a speech during the lunch that despite an ease in the tension, Cambodian troops will not tolerate any violations or invasion by the Thai side. Cambodia will use self-defence to fight back to defend Cambodian territory, he said.
