Cambodian fishermen from Kampot province have claimed that there are illegal Vietnamese fishing boats had illegally entered Cambodian territorial waters to catch fish of the Kampot coasts at night time, reports Radio Free Asia.

Kampot fishermen said that hundreds of Cambodian fishing families living in 4 communes in Kampot district are facing hardship due to the depletion of fish stock in the area because the Vietnamese fishing boats had used electric shock and illegal fishing equipments in the area.

The Cambodian fishermen living in 4 communes from Koh Toch, Sre Koh, Keb and Trapaing L’pov communes in Kampot province said the Vietnamese fishing boats usually fish in Cambodian waters from night time until day time. They said about 10 of these Vietnamese fishing boats had entered Cambodian waters every night.

Cambodian fishermen are blaming the Cambodian provincial fishery officials for not taking actions against these illegal Vietnamese fishermen when the villagers complained to them.

Sma Lim, a 40-year-old fisherman from Sre village, Sre Koh commune, Kampot district and province, told RFA over the phone that fish had almost been depleted. “Before they (Vietnamese boats) came, we can catch 4-10 kilograms of shrimps. Now, we can’t even catch 1 kilogram per night! We don’t want anything, just don't want these Vietnamese fishing boats to invade our fishing area! Otherwise, the small [Cambodian] fishing boats will have nothing to catch”, he said.

The fishermen said they had sent a petition with the thumbprints of 300 to 400 families to report to the Kampot authority last week, but so far they have not received the reply yet.

Keo El, a 46-year-old fisherman from Sre Koh commune, said fisherman's livelihood are facing hardship. “Our fishing nowadays has been greatly affected because the Viet fishing boats entered into Cambodian territorial waters. They use modern fishing equipments, electric shock devices and they dragged their nets all night, they take everything”, he said.

Nao Thuork, the director of the Cambodian Fishery Department, said the claims made by these fishermen are false. “I had received some complaints, but [the Vietnamese illegal fishing] is not as widespread as have been claimed. We have posted our people the monitor the area, but the sea boundaries are adjoining. They [Cambodian fishermen] always said that the Vietnamese boats had illegally entered our waters. We do not allow them to enter our waters, but if they had trespassed, the number is very small", he said.

Cambodia is currently after illegal fishing during the prohibited fishing season which lasts between June and October. During this season, large scale fishing is prohibited, as well as fishing through fine nets, electric shocking devices or grenades, in order to increase the fish population in 2010.

Mr. Nao Thuork, why is every time your own people filed complaints that involved Vietnamese, you and other Khmer officials always making counter-claims that they are fault's claims. Is this an excuse for you and other officials not to do anything about it. I mean, this a serious issue, the officials need to take aggressive action for our people, don't let the Vietnamese called our people, government officials, and especially yourself, Mr. Nao Thuork the frivolous (STUPID) people on the face of this earth. Our government officials, it is time to say to the Vietnamese, that we are no longer afraid of you, and we are no longer tolerate the unfairness of treatment by your government and your people.

The bastard that is not defending his people from Youn invading Khmer water, is Youn's dog. He can only barks at his own Khmer people, but not toward Youn. If he dares not to say anything negative of Youn, he dares to lose his job. Youn has Cambodian government by the balls. They are the slaves of Youn. Whatever Youn want, Youn get. If Youn want to do fishing in Cambodia's water, Youn can do that. If Youn wanted to cut trees in Cambodia and shipped to Vietnam, Youn has that right also. This kind of bullshit is pissing me off and making me become more bitter toward Youn the Youn's dogs.
