Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary General of Asean who is a Thai national, said he wants Cambodia and Thailand to resolve border issue peacefully and pledged to engage Cambodia and Thailand with other Asean members over the issue, reports Deum Ampil.
Speaking to national and international reporters after a 30 minute talk with Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namong at the Cambodian Foreign Ministry this morning, Monday 16th August, Dr. Surin said Asean wants both countries to resolve the issue peacefully, but said he has to wait until he talks to all Asean Foreign Ministers in a meeting Vietnam in October first before he can make any decision whether to engage Asean in the Cambodia-Thai conflict.
Dr. Surin made a visit to Cambodia after Cambodia sent two letters to the UN Security Council on 8th August after Thai PM threatened to use "military means" to settle the issue and after Mr. Hor Namhong sent letters to all Asean members on 14th August asking for Asean's engagement in helping to resolve the conflict peacefully. Mr. Hor Namhong said up to now he has not received any reply from any members yet.
Mr. Hor Namhong said Cambodia also wants a peaceful solution to the conflict, but said bilateral negotiations had reached an impasse and might not be able to proceed in the future because of the lack of sincerity from the Thai side. He said three agreements reached in previous talks between the Cambodian and Thai foreign ministers had not been ratified by the Thai parliament yet, two years after the conflict had erupted.
