Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has sought UN's help by writing a letter to the UN Security Council after Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva threatened to use force to settle the Preah Vihear dispute if diplomacy does not yield a satisfactory result for Thailand.
In an address to Thai protesters on 7th August, Mr. Abhisit was alleged to have said that Thailand is prepared to use force to take control over a plot of land surrounding the temple complex claimed by both Thailand and Cambodia. "About the land encroachment, we will cancel the MOU if the problem can't be settled. We will use both democratic and military means," Mr. Abhisit was quoted by The Nation newspaper as telling the protesters. The Cambodian Foreign Ministry swiftly issued a strong statement in response to Abhisit's threats.
In the letter, Mr. Hun Sen had drawn the attention of the UNSC to the fact that Preah Vihear temple issue had been settled once and for all by the Franco-Siamese Convention of 1904, the Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907 and the verdict of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) of 1962 and the 1908 maps which were accepted by the then Siamese king.
Mr. Hun Sen's letter had also drawn the UNSC's attention to the verdict of the ICJ which stated that "...the Temple of Preah Vihear is situated in territory under the sovereignt of Cambodia;"
and that "Thailand is under an obligation to withdraw any military or police forces, or other guards or keepers, stationed by her at the Temple, or in its vicinity within Cambodian territory."
The letter accused Thailand of violating articles 2.3 and 2.4 of the UN Charter. The letter also stressed that Cambodia re-affirms its policy not to use force to settle any disputes, but said it reserves its "legitimate rights" to defend its "sovereignty and territorial integrity" in the face of aggression by Thailand.
Mr. Hun Sen had also requested the UNSC to widely circulate the letter to all members of the UNSC for information.

Good Job Hun Sen
Good job, but he should have done this a long time ago. Thailand has working very hard on the national and international level to win the hearts and minds of the international community. Cambodia has historical facts and legal advantage, so we must use these advantages to step up our campaign on the Preah Vihear issue. Never give up one inch to Thailand. Use the treaties and verdict of international court to protect our territory.
Abhisit and Thailand act like barbarians here. Being a member of the international community, Thailand must respect international laws and its agreement with Cambodia. It must respect 1908 map, its 1904 convention and 1907 treaty it signed with Cambodia and the 1962 court verdict which gave temple and surrounding area to Cambodia.
Hun Sen probaly the world most stupid PM.
He put his own people, In Svay Reang, who lost their farm to Hanoi, in jail.
He bans any independent committee to to observe the demarcation in the eastern border.
He sold thousand of hectares of farmland to Hanoi to plant rubbers plants, when so many Khmer are slaving in Thailand and many other countries. There are too many Khmer in Phnom Penh, who are expert in this field since 1960 do not understand this policy.
Hun Sen clan would like to see the border conflict with Thailand prolong further, because every year they take 260 millions US dollars to spend secretly for defend budget , without proper documentation. Some inner circles believe that most of the money end up in Huns'clan bank accounts.
You will see his policies time bomb will reduce Khmer and Cambodia to just a slavery kingdom, where everything are owned by his master Hanoi and every Khmer will be their slaves.
Modern battle field is on the economic battle field.

Khuang Aphaiwong (May 17, 1902 - March 15, 1968; Thai ควง อภัยวงศ์) was the founder of the current Thai democratic party. Khuang happened to be the first Khmer descent to serve 3 terms as Thai prime misnister from 1945-48. If Khuang were alive today, he would be shocked to see the current Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva, under his democratic party, attacking Cambodia in the most brutal savage way against his Khmer heritage!
Khmer Surin
Khmer Surin,
All Khmers appreciate your input. It's sad to see Khmers and Thais at odds with the ownership of a land and temple that's been clearly defined. The 2000 MOU was signed by Abhisit's Democratic Party predecessor Chuan Leekpai. Now he wanted to cancel it. The 1908 map, 1904 convention and 1907 treaty were all signed by Thai king. If we used these agreements there would be no problems. Cambodia has lost too much lands to Thailand already, so it's time Thailand ceases its hegemonic ambitions.
