Cambodian commanders said some Thai soldiers might have been wounded or killed during a 15 minutes clash with Cambodian troops in Oddar Meanchey province, 47 kilometres from Preah Vihear temple, reports Deum Ampil.

The two sides clashed briefly at 9:30 am on Tuesday at O'Chambok Point near Choup Roun commune in Tropeang Prasat district in Oddar Meanchey province when both sides met each other during patrols along the borders.

Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodian commander for the Cambodian-Thai border operations, said 15 Cambodian troops were attacked by a group of Thai soldiers during the patrol. He said when both sides met during the patrol, Thai troops launched an attack on Cambodian troops with M-79 rockets and M-16 automatic rifles without warning. The Cambodian troops then returned fires with AK-47 and PKM machine guns which forced the Thai side to flee back into Thai territory. "After 15 minutes of fighting, Thai soldiers fled back into Thai territory. This is not the first time that they fled after the clash, but it has become their habit as they have usually fled back into Thai territory every time there are clashes", he said.

Mr. Chhim Sivuthy, Inspector of Oddar Meanchey provincial town, said some Thai soldiers might have been killed or wounded. He said, after the clash, Cambodian troops went to examine the Thai position and found two helmets, two M-16 automatic rifles and a knapsack containing 40 rounds of M-16 bullets and three shells of M-79 rockets left behind.

Kampuchea Thmey quoted Gen. Chea Dara as saying that, after the clash, Thai commanders had contacted him to apologise by admitting that Thai troops had strayed into Cambodian territory.

Mr. Chhim Sivuthy said currently both sides are reinforcing troops and are on high alert.
