The Phnom Penh Court has issued an arrest warrant against opposition leader Sam Rainsy (pictured), who is living in self-imposed exile, for skipping court hearing three times, reports Radio Free Asia.
The government lodged a lawsuit against Mr. Sam Rainsy on 26th February for disinformation and document forgery after he released a series of maps and documents purported to show Vietnamese encroachments on Cambodian borders. He was also sentenced in absentia to 2 years jail on 27th January for uprooting border posts in late 2009.
However, Mr. Yim Sovan, a spokesman for the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), said that Mr. Rainsy has no intention of returning to Cambodia. "Let the court does whatever it wants with its power, but I consider this as a (political) theatre, there is no truth in it (the accusation) and it (the court) will not render his Excellency the President (Sam Rainsy) any real justice at all", he said.
Mr. Ky Tek, lawyer for the government, refused to elaborate on the warrant for Rainsy's arrest, only to say that let justice takes its course. "It means that the legal procedures require that the court issues an arrest warrant", he said.
The arrest warrant against Sam Rainsy came at a time when more claims of border encroachments by Vietnam in Takeo province were brought to public attention in recent days.
