Prime Minister Hun Sen has sacked a senior government minister by accusing him of working with the opposition parties against the government, reports Cambodian Express News.
Mr. Hun Sen has sacked Gen. Hun Phoeung (pictured), Secretary of State of Defence Ministry from the Funcinpec Party, during a cabinet meeting on Friday the 7th of May because he said Gen. Hun Phoeung had been secretly working with the opposition against the government.
A source who attended the cabinet meeting said Mr. Hun Sen told the meeting that there are two groups of people in the Funcinpec Party. One was led by the party secretary general, Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay, who are closely working with the government. The other group is led by the party vice-president, Mr. Lu Laysreng, who are secretly working with the opposition parties. Mr. Hun Sen said Gen. Hun Phoeung's sacking was done followed a request from the Funcinpec Party.
Gen. Hun Phoeung was a close associate of Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay. However, the source said that he has now become too close to Mr. Lu Laysreng.
Gen. Hun Phoeung said he does not know the reason why he was sacked, but said he does not pay much attention to the issue either. However, he has denied that he has worked with the oppositions against the government, saying that he has never met any officials from the opposition parties, not even ordinary members of the opposition parties.
Mr. Khieu Kanharith, the government spokesman, confirmed the sacking but refused to comment by directing all questions to Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay. However, Deum Ampil reported that a call to Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay went unanswered.
Mr. Lu Laysreng also refused to comment about Gen. Hun Phoeung's sacking, saying he has not received any information about the issue.

The Cambodians are hopeless when it comes to unity for the common good.
Nhiek Bunchhay gets rid of his own people when he is suspicious that they may not totally be in agreement with him!

Can we say that the KR mentality is one of the Khmer mentality problems condemned in Mr. Bun Chanmol's book entitled "Charet Khmer"?

I think Hun Sen is using a "divide and rule" strategy with Funcinpec by trying to incite a split and rivalry between Nhiek bunchhay and the rest of other Funcinpec leaders. Nhiek Bunchhay now is a Hun Sen servant and he doesn't think about Funcinpec, only his own power.
