Cambodia's two royalist parties, Funcinpec and Nationalist, have finalised an alliance agreement called Funcinpec-Nationalist Alliance, which will see both parties merged into a single party before the commune election in 2012, reports Radio Free Asia.
Funcinpec was broken up in 2006 when Prince Ranariddh was ousted in a party coup led by Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay. Many Funcinpec members followed him to form the Norodom Ranariddh Party- the precursor of the Nationalist Party.
President of Funcinpec Party, Mr. Keo Put Rasmy, said past divisions have weakened the two royalist parties significantly and it is time for them to reunite. "We have broken up, so we must reunite again....Funcinpec was a party that have brought peace and national reconstruction since 1993...so Funcinpec still has the role in serving the nation in the future", he said.
He said the alliance is necessary as a prelude to the merger of the two parties. "We might merge just before the election...and we will start to merge at our commune levels leading up to the 2012 commune election as a preparation for a permanent merger", he added.
Free Press Magazine Online, has quoted Mr. Lu Laysreng (pictured), First Vice-President of Funcinpec, as saying that the newly-reunited party will adopt Funmcinpec as its official party name, but will have co-presidents, one from Funcinpec and the other from the Nationalist Party, as its leaders.
Currently, both parties hold two parliamentary seats each and hope the reunited Funcinpec-Nationalist Party will win more seats in the 2013 election.

Big Deal! soon they split again. Watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!They are CPP, hun xen's tool.
Funcinpec, stop wasting time and stop confusing voters. You won election in 1993. you did not do your jobs. After that you were broken pieces, now you try to collect piece by piece and put back together. How could it be. Plus you are all hun hen's puppets.
This is a desperate attempt by desperate people and desperate parties.
Each of you, do yourself a BIG favor, please.
Don't make a fool of yourself in trying to be smart. 2 parties under 1 name will make DOUBLE trouble for Cambodia.
FUNCINPEC is a piece of shit as far as a political party is concerned!
The Norodom Ranariddh party is the same shit!
Give them no vote as they will do nothing for Cambodia, but themselves.
It is time for both of them to go.
