26 members of parliament from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) had written a letter to Deputy PM and Interior Minister Sar Kheng requesting for a permission to visit the two jailed farmers, who were imprisoned on charges of sabotage when they followed SRP President Sam Rainsy to uproot six wooden border markers on 25th October 2009, reports everyday.com.
Gen. Khieu Sopheak, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said he had already received the request letter but said the SRP should write a letter to the Svay Rieng Provincial Court which has the jurisdiction over this legal matter.
Gen. Khieu Sopheak, however, said that the SRP's request is politically motivated. "They must write to the investigating judge. But I notice that there are plenty of prisoners (in the prison system) but they chose to visit only two prisoners. This is a request with political motivation. Furthermore, there are 26 of them, so maybe we won't have enough seats for them to sit", he said.
The two jailed farmers, Mrs. Meas Srey ans Mr. Prum Chea, were arrested immediately after they appeared in court on charges of sabotage and destruction of public property when they uprooted border markers which they said were planted illegally in the middle of their rice fields.
