Hun Sen: All Buddhist pagoda must seek permission from government before accepting a Thai Kathen

By Khmerization

Prime Minister Hun Sen (pictured) has directed all Cambodian pagoda to seek permission from the government first before they can accept any Thai Kathen (religious fundraising ceremony), reports everyday.com.

Mr. Hun Sen's bans came amid renewed diplomatic tensions between the two countries after a war of words between PM Hun Sen and Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.

During the heights of the diplomatic tensions in November 2009, Mr. Hun Sen banned all aids from Thailand and warned any officials who accept Thai aids will be sacked.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, Mr. Hun Sen said some people consider Kathen as aid. "There are (Thai) newspaper reports which claimed that a Thai Kathen is considered as Thai aid too. From today onward, whoever and whichever pagoda in Cambodia that want to accept any Thai Kathen must ask permission from the government first in order to avoid criticism that we accept Thai Kathen as Thai aid. On the contrary, you (Thailand) must thank Cambodia for allowing you to come and hold a religious cereomy in Cambodia ", he said.

Hun Sen doesn't care because he is not the one who will suffer, it is Cambodia and the Cambodian poor people will suffer.
