HRP requested government to provide stats on immigration

By Khmerization

The Human Rights Party (HRP) has written two letters to the government requesting it to provide statistics on the numbers of immigrants, especially Vietnamese immigrants, living in Cambodia, reports Radio Free Asia.

In a letter to National Assembly President Heng Samrin dated on 4th December, Mr. Ou Chanrith (pictured), HRP MP for Kandal, requested the Interior Ministry to provide statistics about the numbers of natuarlised immigrants. He told RFA like this: "Our concerns as members of parliament as well as the concerns of the people is that we've seen a large flow of the numbers of illegal immigrants to Cambodia. As an MP, I write this letter to request the Interior Ministry as well as the government to explain who come to live in our country legally, meaning naturalised migrants. For our Khmer people who have entered other countries, they have been sent back to our country. But the Cambodian government never take measures against those living illegally in Cambodia".

RFA is unable to seek comments from Interior Minister Sar Kheng. However, Gen. Khieu Sopheak, Interior Ministry spokesman, said he had not received the letter yet.

Mr. Our Chanrith said he worry that the presence of large numbers of illegal immigrants will one day cause political turmoil in Cambodia. "In general, myself as well as the general Khmer population know that the majority of illegal immigrants living in Cambodia come from Vietnam. This can pose a lot of issues that can bring dangers to Cambodia such as them taking jobs away from Khmer citizens and in the future can lead to the loss of territories as well if we do not take measures against those who are living illegally in Cambodia", he said.

Other opposition parties as well as civil society have expressed concerns about uncontrolled illegal immigrations to Cambodia. They urge the government to take strong measures to curb future illegal immigrations.

Yes, the government must put in place measures to control immigration, especially illegal immigration.

Thailand and Vietnam have repatriated many Khmer migrants back to Cambodia every month. So, why can't we do the same with the illegal migrants from our neighboring countries?

Do investigation and if found out that anyone is living illegally in Cambodia, they must be sent back to their countries of origin, this is international law.
