Mrs. Hillary Clinton expressed concerns about Khmer-Thai border disputes

Reported by Khmerization

The US Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton (pictured), has expressed concerns about the Khmer-Thai border disputes and had asked both sides to resolve the disputes peacefully as well as to expedite the border agreements, reports Deum Ampil newspaper.

Deum Ampil quoted the Nation newspaper as saying that, during a one week visit to the US, Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya had reported to Mrs. Clinton that the political situations in Thailand had returned to normalcy and that Thailand will do everything to resolve the border issues with Cambodia peacefully.

After the meeting with Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Kasit was quoted as saying: "I have re-affirmed that the Bangkok government will resolve border disputes with Cambodia by using all peaceful means. The Thai government will continue to support infrastructure building in Cambodia despite the disputes between the two countries."

Despite Mr. Kasit's assurances, Mrs. Clinton had expressed concerns and urged Cambodia and Thailand to resolve the disputes through peaceful means.

At the same time, Mr. Hor Namhong, Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs, had travelled to the US to inaugurate a Cambodian condulate in Massachussetts. But, according to Mr. Koy Kuong. spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, Mr. Hor Namhong did not request for any meeting with any senior American officials, reports Deum Ampil.

Concurrently, during a visit to Australia on 24th April 2009, Mr. Heng Samrin, chairman of Cambodian National Assembly had met many high profile Australian politicians. In a meeting with a group of Australian parliamentarians led by Mrs Julia Irwin, Mr. Heng Samrin told the Australian parliamentarians that Cambodia and Thailand had met many times on the border issues but the discussions did not yield any results. But both side agreed to continue the peace talks, Deum Ampil reported Mr. Heng Samrin as saying.

Mr. Julia Irwin is a Member of Parliament for Fowler/Cabramatta Electorate, where a large number of Cambodian population lives.
