Opposition denies asking for funding from hotel to hold rally [The letter sounds fake and written in an extortionate manner which I don't think a major opposition party like the CNRP would have done]

 

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- An opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party senior official has denied that her party had asked for money from a hotel owner to fund their rally in Siem Reap on Human Rights Day (Dec. 10).

An alleged opposition party letter surfaced implicating the party in a scandal in which the party had asked the executive director of the Le Maridien Angkor Hotel in Siem Reap for $5,000 to fund their rally.

"This is not the policy of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), and the party does not have the authority," Ke Sovanrath, CNRP’s elected Member of Parliament representing Siem Reap, told reporters Thursday. 

"CNRP held the rally to demand justice for voters, and every contribution to the party was made voluntarily," she said. 

However, in the letter dated December 9th said that the CNRP, led by Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha, would hold a mass protest in Siem Reap, and that the rally would cost a lot, so the party asked the hotel for $5,000 to hold their rally. 

"In the case, you [hotel executive director] provide the money, we would guarantee to ensure the security of the hotel grounds, if not, we would not take any responsibility for what would happen," the letter said.
