US Urges Solution to Cambodian Political Impasse

The U.S. is urging Cambodia's political factions to resolve their differences, as the opposition continues to boycott parliament after a disputed election.
Senior State Department official Scot Marciel said Friday it's encouraging the sides have been talking, but it remains to be seen if they can reach an agreement. He said there's a "plausible scenario" in which both parties play an appropriate role in running the country, while also moving ahead with electoral reforms.
The opposition leader Sam Rainsy is demanding an independent probe into reported irregularities in the July election which he claims robbed his party of victory over longtime ruler Hun Sen's party, which won with a reduced majority.
The U.S. has supported a probe, but Marciel, who visited Cambodia this month, stressed the U.S. wasn't taking sides.
