CC warns of possible imprisonment if decision not upheld

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH, 12 September 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- The Constitutional Council on Thursday issued a statement warning that those who violate or don't abide by its decision could be sentenced up to one year in prison or fined up to 600,000 riel.
"The Constitutional Council has already examined and solved the 15 election complaints filed by the Cambodia National Rescue Party on September 6 in coherence with the law,” said the statement.

The Constitutional Council have always maintains its independence from other entities, the statement added.

The warning was issued immediately after an unnamed organization related to Comfrel on Wednesday criticized the Constitutional Council's election resolution process.

The opposition CNRP had filed 15 complaints against the results of the election after National Election Committee (NEC) announced their preliminary results on August 12, handing the initial victory to the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP).

In the complaints, the opposition party asked the Constitutional Council to review the election lists, verify the election results in the voting stations of certain provinces, and demanded a e-election.

However, the Constitutional Council denied the requests saying that the decision of the Constitutional Council is the final. - See more at: http://www.thecambodiaherald.com/cambodia/detail/1?page=11&token=OTRiNzc5OTY1N2J#sthash.cUidNQUZ.dpuf
