Foreign embassies warned: don't interfere in internal issues [It's laughable that Cambodia survives on the hand out from foreign donors, but it warns them to zip their mouth]

Give our kids a better deal

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Foreign Affairs spokesman on Monday warned and reacted strongly to the US over its statement voicing their concerns with Cambodia's assembly expulsions.

"Any embassy should not release statements that will interfere with Cambodia’s internal affairs," said Koy Kuong, spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. "The decision to oust lawmakers from the opposition parties are well within the rights of Cambodia’s National Assembly law."

In Saturday’s statement, the Unites States said that it was “deeply concerned” by reports that opposition lawmakers have been expelled from Cambodia’s National Assembly.

"Such a decision starkly contradicts the spirit of a healthy democratic process," State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

On Wednesday last week, the 28 lawmakers belonging to Cambodia's two opposition parties were told they were no longer valid members of parliament (MP) by a permanent parliamentary committee made up of members of the ruling CPP party.

The committee said it was taking the steps necessary as both opposition parties had joined to form a new opposition organization ahead of July elections and were therefore not eligible to remain as MPs.

Opposition lawmakers rejected the move and said parliament itself was rendered invalid by telling them they were no longer MPs.

"We strongly support a political process that includes the full participation of all political parties on a level playing field," Ms. Psaki said in a statement.

"Stripping the salaries and parliamentary status of the opposition party legislators deprives the Cambodian people of their voice and hurts the democratic process in Cambodia, Psaki added.

"Full participation of all elected representatives is essential to the democratic process."
