1.5 mln hectares of land concessions granted [These concession lands have been robbed from the poor to give to the rich]

PHNOM PENH, 19 March 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- Hun Sen announced that 1.5 mln hectares of Economic Land Concessions were granted to private companies.

1.2 mln hectares, 80 percent, of the concessions are used for rubber plantation sector.

100 thousand workers are employed on 300 thousand hectares of rubber plantations, the Prime Minister said, in the opening ceremony on Green Growth.

840 thousand hectares, 70 percent, of the land concessions for the rubber plantation sector will be filled with rubber plants and harvested by utilizing 1.3 mln workers in the next five years.

He said, that Cambodia still maintain 9.2 mln hectares of forest land even though 1.5 mln hectares of land concessions were given.

This action reflects an equilibrium which has to be done in order to provide jobs for citizens to reduce poverty, migration, and as well as for  environmental protection and sustainability of natural resources.

"Rubber plants are also trees, and 1.2 mln hectares of rubber plantations can provide work to 1.3 mln people," he said. "Both can co-exist, maintaining the forest and better living conditions for the people."
