Cambodia cannot drop ICJ complaint against Thailand: official

PHNOM PENH, 6 February 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) --  Cambodia cannot drop its request for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to explain it verdict over the Preah Vihear Temple in 1962, an official said Wednesday.

The remarks by Koy Koung, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, followed reports that Thailand's opposition had urged the government to negotiate with Cambodia to withdraw its complaint.

"The story is not new to Cambodia," he said. "Cambodian  officials have already replied and we still have the same answer. The court is doing the task," the spokesman said.

"Both parties should stay silent and wait and see. Prime Minister Hun Sen has also stated that only the ICJ could solve the problem without military clashes."

He said the situation along the Cambodia-Thai border was stable, especially around the Preah Vihear Temple, and that soldiers from both sides were getting on well.

The ICJ, located in The Hague, is scheduled to start hearings on the issue on April 19.

In 2008, Thai troops took control of an area around the temple, claiming that 4.6 square kilometers belonged to Thailand. The two sides have since clashed, leaving dead and injured on both sides.

The Siam asked us to drop the complain, that is very bold. Why don't they just say "Khmer should give them Preah Vihear and everything will be the end" and we'll be friend again.
