PHNOM PENH - Cambodia has imported more than 100 tanks from Europe to bolster national defense, officials said Tuesday.

“Those are really important,” said Defense Minister Tea Banh, who declined to give details on the kinds of tanks and the total number. “From 100 to 200 tanks” were imported from European countries, he said. “These are for improving our capacity, for training and for a time when it is necessary to use them,” he said.

A senior defense official told VOA Khmer the military shipment included tanks, armored personnel carries and material, arriving in the port of Sihanoukville on Tuesday.

Cambodia purchased nearly 100 tanks from Eastern Europe in 2010, during a border standoff with Thailand near Preah Vihear temple.

Defense officials said Cambodia must continue to improve its defense capabilities. That has meant a lion’s share of the national budget goes toward defense spending. In 2012, the government allotted $350 million of $2.5 billion budget toward defense.

This should be a top secret. Now our enemies know that we bought military hardware and pictures of the hardware are splashed in many international media. Thailand and Vietnam bought huge cache of weapons and military hardware but no one knows about it. Hun sen just can't keep the secret or don't know how to keep the secret.

But these hardware are not for full scale war because some of the tanks or APCs look like toys. I think they are for Hun Sen's private army.

Hun Sen already have secret tunnels, helicopters, and bullet proof cars.

Nows he spent more national resources without the need of approval from the National Assembly, is Hun Sen plannng another coups in 1997, where hundreds of oppositions and protesters were bombed and killed in the street?

We have newly upgraded tanks, so, we have to sell these obsolete tanks to Cambodia for cheap prices. We have no place for piling up in our country, it’s better to keep space for modern tanks. Hah ha!

Those tanks are from in Eastern European's museum.

Hun bought them, because he fear of internal uprising, from the CPP itself. They are light weight tanks designed 60 years ago,but useful to suppress civilians.
