PHNOM PENH, 13 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - The National Election Committee has
rejected a complaint by the opposition Sam Rainsy Party that a
government official used state time to join a recent commune election
campaign.
In rejecting the complaint, the NEC found that Pen Simorn, head of the General Department of Custom and Excise at the Ministry of Commerce, had sought to take time off.
"The case didn’t violate the law as Pen Simorn asked for permission from his ministry so we rejected the complaint," NEC secretary general Tep Nitha said Wednesday.
Hing Yoeun, who lodged the complaint, said the rejection was "an unfair decision which is unacceptable but I cannot continue complaining to any other institution as the NEC’s decision is final under the election law.”
