The reasons for the shooting of a Thai helicopter in Koh Kong

Cambodian military commanders had confirmed that Cambodian soldiers had fired at a Thai helicopter after it had ignored a warning from Cambodian soldiers not to trespass into Cambodian airspace and after it had attempted to land inside Cambodian territory at O'Trav area in Koh Kong province on 15th December.

Cambodian military leaders insisted that Cambodian soldiers opened fire at the Thai helicopter as a last resort after it crossed into Cambodian airspace and attempted to land inside Cambodian territory without permission.

The incident started the day before, at 9 a.m 14th December, when a group of 7 Thai soldiers came to tell Cambodian soldiers from the 303rd Battalion based O'Trav area that a Thai helicopter will land at the area the next day, 15th December, but Cambodian soldiers strongly opposed the landing, saying that they will shoot if the helicopter attempt to land in the area. The 7 Thai soldiers angrily retorted that the helicopter will land with or without the permission from the Cambodian soldiers. "I must follow my commander's order which is to land in the area at all cost", a Thai soldier was quoted as saying. "I must also follow my commander's order to shoot if you land", retorted a Cambodian soldier.

Cambodian soldiers reported that at 1 p.m the next day, 15th December, a helicopter flew to the area and hovering over the area in an attempt to land in O'Trav area and a Cambodian soldier had fired about one magazine of AK-47 rifle as warning shots. The Thai helicopter did not turn back, but instead flew deeper into Cambodian territory and attempted to land at Point 329 and the Cambodian soldiers based in that area released another two magazines from an AK-47 rifle as warning shots. At this point the helicopter turned back toward Thailand and fired many rounds of M-16 at the Cambodian soldiers and landed safely at a nearby Thai military base.

Gen. Dy Phen, Deputy Commander of Border Protection, who is a personal advisor and nephew of Prime Minister Hun Sen, conceded that Cambodian soldiers had fired 100 rounds of AK-47s and that some bullets had hit the rear tail of the helicopter which forced it to land on the Khmer-Thai border at a triangle of Cambodia's Koh Kong and Pursat provinces.

On the other hand, Cambodian soldiers based in the area insisted that their bullets did not hit the helicopter, but the Thai side claimed that many bullets had hit the helicopter.

Koh Santepheap reported that it has not been successful in an attempt to contact Brig-Gen. Yun Min, commander of the Koh Kong Command, to seek clarification.

Reports from Koh Kong said that on the afternoon of 15th December, the Thai side had closed a border crossing at Khav Vong Point, but the Chaim Yeam International Checkpoint remained open.

Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, said Cambodia has not released any official statement yet regarding the incident because the Defence Ministry is still waiting for a report from the field commanders about the incident.

Today, 16th December, Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Banh told Deum Ampil News that Cambodian soldiers were forced to fire warning shots after the Thai helicopter ignored a warning and still attempted to illegally land inside Cambodian territory. "This Thai military helicopter intended to land inside Cambodian territory, but we forbid it from landing. They (Thais) have no reason to land there because they have never landed there before, but this time they adamantly want to land there, so we are forced to fire warning shots", he told Deum Ampil News.
