PHNOM PENH, Dec 5 (Cambodia Herald) - One of three former Khmer Rouge leaders on trial for crimes against humanity and genocide gave details of his early life in Thailand Monday and asserted that he was as patriotic as other Cambodians.

“I love the nation," said Nuon Chea (pictured), the former deputy secretary general of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, also known as Brother Number Two. "I am loyal to the nation, sacrificing my family as other compatriots do,” he told the UN-backed Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) as the trial after resumed a week-long break.

The three former leaders are accused of being responsible for the deaths of between 1.7 million and 2.2 million people during the Pol Pot regime between 1975 and 1979. The others on trial are former foreign minister Ieng Sary and former head of state Khieu Samphan.

During Monday's testimony, Nuon Chea stated that his real name was Lao Kimron and that he was born to a Khmer mother and a Chinese father.

He said he learned about communism and got involved in political activities while studying law at Thammasat University in Thailand.

Nuon Chea said he used to work for government of Thailand at both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before returning home in around 1950 or 1951 when he heard about French colonial forces killing Cambodians.

Nuon Chea "love" the Nation. His brother-in-law, official at the National bank in PPenh and another of his bother-in-law, a capitain of Lon Nol army, were killed by the KR in 1975 after the KR took over the power.

Before having control of the power,All Communists and Communits intellectuals show the People their kindess, their clean-ness and
their compassion to the people...

But when they get their full power they show their real face and mind. We all have experienced that....No need to elaborate....
