Former two-star generals Lay Virak (pictured) and Khoun Roeun and two accomplices were sent to Prey Sar prison yesterday after appearing in the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning related to their drug trafficking charges.

Presiding Judge Sieng Sok said the pair and their accomplices, Cheang Chhunly and Soun Seila, had been charged with drug trafficking and use of illegal weapons – after they were found with about 1 kilogram of crystal methamphetamine and AK47s on Monday.

In court, the two-star generals – both senior defence advisers – remained silent, but Lay Virak’s sister Lay Vary testified in support of her brother. “His character is good; I do not believe that he acted like this. I know my brother’s character,” she said.

The four defendants and their lawyers could not be reached for comment.

If you are going to become the gangster in Cambodia; you got to be on the right side of the gang. Otherwise, your life and protection is not guaranteed. I am sure there many millionair gangster walking around supply monies and build schools whenever PM needed it. How are you going to challenge such a powerful, well connected group? Cambodia will die from the hand of it belove leader that so called "patriot" to Cambodia. What an amazing empire that shrunk to a tiny island. My Vietnamese friend work as tour guide and he is amaze with the Khmer history and he knows more Khmer history and the land took then a regular Cambodian. It kinda strange to see Vietnamese guy telling the tourist about Cambodian palace, ankor wat etc.. I feel like Vietnam already own Cambodia and they kept it as museum or trophy to show off the world of what they have conquer. I noticed that all the black were doing the gardening and swept the street while the white chinese/vietnamese collect the entrance fee to visit ankor or the palace. only in cambodia, yet there are many group that call themselves "sheaha jeat". Sometime, I wonder what the hell did they do to call themselve "sneaha jeat". I actually proud to those muslim brothers and sisters that took risk to fight Thailand and others. I don't Khmer has the appetite for that... I could be wrong, well... only time will tell.

He was targeted because he sympathized with the oppositions. A lot of army monkeys have AK-47 and drugs in their home(s).

5:47 AM, I agreed with you. Lay Virak was one of the most capable and brave commanders who fought fearlessly with the Vietnamese invaders in the 1980s and 1990s. I don't think he was involved in drug trafficking or anything. He was arrested for political reason because he sympathized with the oppositions. Maybe Hun Sen is scared that Lay Virak and other generals might team up with the oppositions to rebel against him like what happened to Gaddafi in Libya.

This is how they cut down their opposition in Cambodia. It a gangster style. Look at the flood victims. Who helps them?
