PHNOM PENH, Nov 19 - Cambodia has the world's 17th largest overseas Chinese community which is less than most of the other ASEAN countries but more than either Britain or France, according to a report received from The Economist online Saturday.

"More Chinese people live outside mainland China than French people live in France, with some to be found in every country," the online service of the British newspaper said.

It said Cambodia had an estimated 340,000 migrants from China compared with an estimated 300,000 in Britain, 230,000 in France and 190,000 in India. Within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, only Laos and Brunei were not among the 20 most popular destinations for Chinese migrants.

The ten biggest overseas Chinese communities were in Indonesia (7.67 million), Thailand (7.06 million), Hong Kong (6.58 million), Malaysia (6.39 million), the United States (3.46 million), Singapore (2.79 million), Canada (1.35 million), Peru (1.30 million), Vietnam (1.26 million) and the Philippines (1.15 million),

Other major Chinese communities were in Myanmar (1.10 million), Russia (1.00 million), South Korea (700,000), Australia (690,000), Macau (530,000), Japan (520,000), Britain (300,000), France (230,000) and India (190,000).

In the year 1940's you can see Chineses everywhere in Cambodia, even in the rural area. But those Chineses, including my grand-parents, got married with local people, and give Cambodia Dynamic off-springs whose become full Khmer citizens. Those off springs are called Chinese descents(not Chineses). They are integrated and even assimilated in the Khmer society. Many of them are businessmen, minister, intellectuels....
Now there are no more Chineses in the rural areas because their Children and grand-children become Cambodians who don't speak Chinese.

OK. But the present Chinese migrants are totally different from our Chinese migrants ancestors. They came by plane, well dressed and organized. Some of them(I say some)are affiliated with the Maffia or the Maffi like corrupted Khmer officials.

Chinese people in Cambodia were frustrated by the Chinese government who supported Pol Pot and did nothing to protect them during the Khmer Rouge regime. Most of them died during this hard time and only very few pure chineses survived the regime.

During the Khmer Rouge era anyone who is not loyal to the regime is kill. It doesn' matter who you are. Some ChinKhmer are mistaken to be Youn and was killed off, visa versa because Khmer Rouge consisted of pro-Chin and pro-Youn. Whatever the case, as long as these people consider themselves Khmer or Khmer chow Chin, we are all Khmer. After what we've been through, we're all Khmer as one. So no need to make a big deal out of it.

Please remembered, the Chinese Khmer are Khmer people and Cambodia is their country and not China.
Nothing wrong for them to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Cambodia.
Most of oversea Khmer or Cambodian also celebrate most of the time the Khmer New Year, Pchom Ben, Boon Kathen or Boon Om Touk etc...

Cambodia definitely needs more chinese migrants to balance with the youn. Chinese dont care too much about taking over khmer land but rather only concern about doing business to support their community and family's wealth.

open our border for the chinese, the more chinese the better for cambodia. This might just be a perfect solution to put an end to viet's dream of taking over cambodia and laos.

salut,

Dear,20 November 2011 11:51 AM.
What is the matter with you?
How do you know for sure that 8:47 PM was showing off his French ? May be he was just not quite being comfortable writing English b/c he's living in France? He even greeted you and me with the word salut! Be a little bit tolerant my friend! if you can not understand French just Google translate it.
As an old man now living in the US, I used to study French in primary school up to university level in Cambodia.Unfortunately I can only read and understand French now but no longer able to write anymore. My English is not that good like someone at the academic caliber either but one thing for sure that I'm proud of is my Khmer language.
