The opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has accused the Phnom Penh Court of interfering in its internal affairs after it issued a temporary injunction against the expulsion of MP Tok Vanchan from the party, after he lodged a complaint to the court.
Mr. Tok Vanchan, MP for Takeo constituency, was expelled from the party on 7th October for "inactivity and disloyalty" to the party, a charge he denied.
On Monday 1oth October, he held a press conference in which he called for the party to reconsider its decision and re-admit his party membership. At the same time, he has also lodged a complaint with the court and almost immediately the court issued a temporary verdict to put an injunction to order the SRP from implementing its decision to expel Tok Vanchan.
Mr. Yim Sovan (pictured), spokesman for the SRP, criticised the court for too hastily interfering in the SRP internal affairs. "It is an issue of a political party, therefore this party has the rights to decide, not the court", he said.
On 7th October, the SRP hastily convened a meeting of its Permanent Committee and decided to expel MP Tok Vanchan, Senator Van Sivoeun and councillor Hok Ly Hak and cautioned 4 others, accusing them of inactivity and disloyalty to the party.
The latest report indicated that, 10 expelled members of the SRP, with the exception of former MP Tok Vanchan, have joined or defected to the Human Rights Party.
