The broad daylight execution-style murder of 23 year-old Thong Makara in Phnom Penh on 3rd October has remained a mystery despite police claiming they are actively investigating the case.
The murder, speculated to be a result of a love triangle affair because Thong Makara was married to a 55 year-old Cambodian-New Zealand man, Kim Sam An, who already had a wife in New Zealand, made headline and the younger brother of the 55 year-old man's wife in New Zealand was taken into custody by police in Phnom Penh. However, since then the case has been kept in the dark and nobody knows if the arrested man, a police officer, has been charged or released.
Gen. Touch Naroth, Phnom Penh Police Commissioner, said the police is actively investigating the case, but said because the husband of the murdered lady live overseas, the investigation is very difficult.
According to the mother of the victim, who witnessed the murder and had tried to apprehend the murderer, Kim Sam An already had a wife in New Zealand when he married her daughter in Cambodia and they both had a two-month old son. Two months ago, Kim Sam An's wife found out about the marriage and became very angry. As a result, she suspected that Kim Sam An's wife might have ordered or hired hitmen to kill her daughter because her daughter had no enemy and that no belonging was stolen during the time she was mudered.
