A group of 8-9 Khmer Krom associations in Cambodia has, on Friday 7th October, sent a petition to the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia to protest against what they called a violation of human rights of the Khmer Krom people living in Vietnam.

Mr. Yont Tharo (pictured), an member of parliament from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and president of the Khmer Krom Association in Cambodia, said the petition is to ask Vietnam to respect the basic rights of the Khmer Krom people. He said the petition was made after the Vietnamese government issued a directive requiring all 140 Khmer Krom Buddhist temples throughout the Kampuchea Krom territory to collect all artefacts and Khmer-language Buddhist scriptures to store them in local museums under the control of the Vietnamese authority.

He said this is another form of ethnic persecution against the Khmer Krom people to deprive them of their Khmer heritage. He said the Vietnamese authority had cut the mobile phone connection of all Khmer Krom people who speak Khmer in their conversation. He said any mobile subscribers who use the Khmer language in communication will have their mobile phone connection cut when the authority found out, but the mobile phones of those who use the Vietnamese language in communication were not cut.

Mr. Yont Tharo said that this is a form of persecution, discrimination and a severe violation of human rights toward the Khmer Krom people who are the indigenous and original inhabitants of the Kampuchea Krom territory in southern Vietnam.

Latest report indicated that the Vietnamese Embassy had refused to receive their petition.

In the past years, there are reports that Vietnamese authority has banned Khmer Krom from listening to Khmer radio or watch TV broadcasts from Cambodia.

We don't hear Hun Sen say anything when the Viet persecute Khmers Krom and deprive them of their language and culture. On the other hand, Hun Sen protects and allows Viet migrants to whatever they want in Cambodia, including creating Viet associations and open Viet schools everywhere.

Some Khmer Krom had told me that if and when they get back their own freedom and independence from Youn, even if it take decades or hundreds of years, they might not want be reunited with Khmer Kondall because of the useless and unhelpful Cambodian government. They do not trust current Cambodian government. Youn had Hun Sen's arms tied up so tight that he's powerless to do anything to help Khmer Krom. This is the problem when you made an agreement with the Youn devils. That is why Khmer must never make any deal with Youn.

I'm so appaul of the situation in Khmer Krom where the Vietnamese government allowed it's citizens practice of prejudice and racism in this modern time. How can they call themselves a member of ASEAN when they are not promoting peace in the region? What is it mean to be a member of ASEAN? Why is it so important to be a member of ASEAN? If prejudice and racism still being promote and practice in Vietnam, how will Vietnam explain this case next time ASEAN meet? Daryl of USA.
