Changes in Cambodia always come from the barrel of a gun

Re: True Khmer: The wheel of justice is unstoppable

It is true that Hun Sen and his cronies have benefited from the present regime and it is also true that his cronies have also suppressed the freedom of speech, but to go as far as accusing that Hun Sen has allowed Hanoi to encroach into our motherland, I'm not so sure if that statement is true. Please let history be history, otherwise we will always have war like the Pol Pot regime.

Hun Sen and his regime have stole billion of dollars from Cambodia. Like most of the past Cambodian leaders, Hun Sen is only working for for himself, not for the poor Cambodians. Sam Rainsy had the opportunity, but he never took the opportunity, only clowning himself and eventually can't even step foot into Cambodia.

In a country like Cambodia, any changes always come from the barrel of a gun, not from the election. Hun Sen was well established but he is just a one man show. If the top military commanders disobeyed him, there is not much he can do, that's why he put all the important posts for his children and his most trusted aides.

Corruption is the way of life in Cambodia and neighboring countries. To stop corruption and establish democracy in Cambodia may take decades and a lot of dedication from clean politician and good education. It is easy said than done.

That's a poor sorry-ass excuse for your violent justification to get what you want. Go read some history, you barbarian, then maybe hopefully you'll be enlightened where fighting fire with fire will get you. Guys like you are what brought on the destructing nature that plunged Cambodia into the 30 years plus civil conflict.

Change your violent mentality or go the hell away. Cambodia doesn't need anymore of you heroic s*&%head that will do more damage than good to the country, the people, and the culture.

Read up on the Khmer Rouge leaders' manifesto and see if your call for justice is somewhat similar to them. They all see themselves as the justice and freedom seeker/provider but in the end, they all end up the thing they vow to fight to rid of.

Why changes in Cambodia always result in bloodbath because we are the fighters...We very much like to settle score by gun, knife, and otehr violent ways. When we don't have foreigners to fight, we fight our sisters/brothers to the death.

That's all about being Khmer/Cambodian.
From the beginning of Khemr empire generation to Angkor generation and all the way to French colony have proved to us in the 21th century generation. To solve differences/problems, we used T-55 tanks to settle between Hun Sen and Ranarrih in the middle of Phnom Penh City. We kill first then we talk... We continue to do this way for the next generation...

bs. I don't believe in the Khmer wearefighter mentality. Fight til your land shrunk to its current size. Khmer people like to believe we are strong by fighting but it looks like we fight hard but not smart. That's how we are reduced to what we are today.

Hello,

We don't have to be that way...just look at Thailand....do they use guns when the defeat party lost an election. No.. we Khmer should learn a thing or two from the Thai thief.

Do you know why we Khmer resort to using guns when we want to change to a new gov't because we are very uneducated than the Thai. And the Khmer loves power. That's why? We Khmer need to educate our Khmer children to learn to be civilize as a people....

For this reason, the Khmer civilization will annihilated from South East Asia in the next 50-100 years.

Negotiation is hard. It requires skills and patient which some of the Khmere leaders did not have.

You just look at Sam Rainsy, he was not living in the KR regime and he was not a soldier during the 80's but he was good enough to work himself into the Gov. I thought he did pretty good until he want to take the hole thing, winner take all.

If he just has enough patient to stay with Gov. to work for change from within then it would help Cambodia tremendeously.

The name of the party is not relevant to the personality of a person. He can be a CCP, SRP or whatever just to get elected then he can works on what he believe in. People in the US change the party all the time just to get elected. I can give you a few name that most people recognize: Ronald Reagan, from Dem. to Republican, Rick Perry, from Dem. to Republican.

Hello,

there are many parties in Thailand but the Thais always think about their country come first; however, in Cambodia, family and getting super rich come first....

Whatever they (thais) they do it in the name of their country not for individual gain....

and with the Khmer; it's about my family and my family getting richer is the better so that they can step on other Khmers.....it's always like this for hundreds and hundreds of years....that's why the Khmer Empire was in ruin.....get divide up into Thailand, Lao, and Khmer today...and eventulally, Khmers lost the Kampuchea Krom to the Vietnamese in the 1949s.....

We Khmer race never ever get along and work for the common goals....

What do I care....????I hope Cambodia get swallow up by the Thais or the Vietmanese or why don't the Khmer gov't sale Cambodia to Japan, Australia, or even the U.S.A....it would do a lot of goods for the poor Khmers....they would have decent health care, food stamps, and even a job trainings from the gov't. The Khmer gov't is there for themselves...not for the people.

was there a civil war in Thailand when the defeat incumbent lost an election? the answer is No. The democrate conceded to the Pheu Thai. And Ms Shinawatra will do her best to protect Thai's interest and safe guarding thailand from the Khmer and the Vietnamese.

How rich is Mr Hun Sen??? according the Forb's magazine...he's worth about $5-8 billions. how poor is the Cambodian? they are very poor. they live on about $.25 to 1.00 a day...

All the money that the donors countries gave to Cambodia, went to Hun Sen's pocket and his CPP cronies.....

I love these Sam Rainsy's people. They are making up all kinds of facts and stories.

Don't try to discredit youself.

12:41 AM, The statement by the author of this article is correct. Changes in Cambodia have always been brought on by the barrel of a gun. Just look at history, has any changes brought on by elections? Lon Nol staged a coup against Sihanouk 1970, Khmer rouge kicked Nol Lon out by war in 1975, Hun Sen and the Vietnamese kicked Pol Pot out in 1979 by invasion and Hun Sen refused to step down in 1993when he lost the election and staged a coup against the elected Funcinpec Party in 1997 and Hun Sen continued to win elections by cheating for the last 3 elections in 1998, 2003 and 2008.

However, we should not resort to use the barrel of a gun to topple Hun Sen, that's why we should hold peaceful protests and rallies against Hun Sen and dictatorship, which is a right guaranteed by Cambodian constitution. If there is violence it will only come from Hun Sen's security forces, not the unarmed protesters.

in respond to 3 September 2011 8:24 AM.

No, I am not a SRP people nor do I a CPP people. I careless about Cambodia or anyone else but it was just sad to see a lot of poor Khmers living or surviving on dime or a quarter a day.

I have been in the USA too long and would never move back to live in a country like Cambodia where the rich look down on the poor.....and there are no equality......

I am proud to say that I voted for President Obama, yes, Obama and I will vote for hime again in 2012.

There is no such thing as equality. The rich always live better than the poor. It does not matter where u live, US whatever. The pretty girl always treat better than the ugly one. This is a reality. Look at KR regime. They tell u no rich, no poor, and everybody equal. It sounds good, but is it true? Don't lie to yourselve, now.

Hun Sen will not hand over power peacefully event he is defeated in the election,he knew quite well the day he handed his prime ministerial post to the new PM is the dome day for his families, but his cronies may survive , the temptation of the greenbacks is overwhelming most of Cambodia politicians.
It fascinating is to see Hun Sen families survive for a week without bodyguards, in the past few decades Hun Sen created a lot of enemies amongst his own people, if not to the categories of brutal at least in the category of use use to get what he wanted, in the eyes of people who benefit from Hun Sen regimes always a fair go for them, but to those who suffer from Hun Sen regimes direct or in direct the day Hun Sen out from the office it should be sooner.
Frankly speaking how can the transition of power peacefully in Cambodia, because Cambodia never in the democracy state, if the PM of Cambodia got no military in his side it is the impossible task for him to perform a daily duty without any interferences because Cambodia is rule by military for soo long .
From the outside Cambodia have the general election, but one must ponder how those general election held it is really open democracy or just for the few privilege CPP only, we should compare Cambodia to Zimbabwe.
Democracy come with the cost history have proven it , Hun Sen supporters will not go quietly they will put the resistance to protect their business interest to the end.

Contrary, what you said or felt about the situation in Cambodia.
You sound did not have a real well of humanistic and educational background.
You only not look down the Khmer people, country Cambodia, but you look down your own bad behaviour and poor personality.

ok, so when is the revolution? are you guy full of shit?

what kind of education do you have or what degree do you hold? I bet all your degree are from Cambodia. which no country in the world recognize. You can buy a diploma in Cambodia. Where I live you have to go through a 4 year education and graduate with at least a 2.00 average to get yours. That's the different between USA and Cambodia, you dumb ass..

the author is full of crab, yet his writing published and gain many responses, good or bad. It looks like people is not ready for Lotus Revolution. Sam Rainsy is running out of time, he needs to get back inside the house. USA and China are at pissing contest to woe Cambodia to their corner. Do you think they have time for Sam Rainsy? Any one picking Sam Rainsy, it will loose the Cambodia's relationship battle. I dare US to pick Sam Rainsy, I dare China to pick Sam Rainsy. Yeb, I thought so, no body willing to risk it.

well, equality or not. In this country (USA), if you work hard you can live well....

I bet in Cambodia when people graduated from, say college, their salary range between 100-800 per month (granted they don't pay tax), where in the USA everybody pay tax, all kind of taxes (foods, excise, income tax, capital gains tax, etc).

Cambodia must have a Constitution that mandate one 6yrs term, or two 4yrs terms so people don't came a dictator.
People must demand that Hun Sen step down from power, but DON'T use Race as an argument. Race will only make you seem like a bigot and a racist.
People who want Hun Sen in Power because their families directly benefiting from him. These people don't care about others beside themselves.

Most of the comment are bias toward Thailand because they forgot one thing that all the former PM were accused of corruption, one way or another !!!

There is coup against Gov. avery two to five years cycle, what do you call that ???

I call it, change with the barrel of gun ???

Not long ago, the Red shirt protestors were hunted down on the street of Bankok, what do you call that ?????
