Hun Sen promised to give up power peacefully

Speaking on 6th July, the 14th anniversary of the bloody coup, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that he will give up power peacefully if his Cambodian People's Party loses the election to be held on 28th July 2013 after the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) had called on him to follow the example of the Thai leadership where the loser gracefully accepted the election result and leaves office peacefully.

Mr. Hun sen had sarcastically assured the SRP that he will step down without any qualm. "And if I lose, I will announce to recognise the election result and push for the parliament to urgently form the new government and I will transfer my position as the prime minister and is also ready to transfer all positions from all the ministries (to the winner)", he said.

Mr. Son Chhay, a senior MP from the SRP, said he wanted to see a free and fair election in Cambodia like in Thailand. "And we want the election in Cambodia to be organised orderly, at least with the same standard like in Thailand. Not only that the SRP has internal problems, but the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) also used to have serious internal problems many, many times already", he said.

Mr. Hun Sen lost the 1993 UNTAC-organised election and refused to step down and instead threatened to secede until Funcinpec Party, the winner, agreed to a coalition deal with him. On 5-6th July 1997, Hun Sen staged a bloody coup to take power from Funcinpec, toppled Prince Ranariddh and appointed himself as the prime minister.

In the past, Mr. Hun Sen, who had turned 59 this year, had publicly declared that he will be prime minister for life or till he is 90 years old.

Interesting article; appearently it is strange for CPP to endorse PM Hun Sen for life as Prime Minister but it is ok for Sam Rainsy to be President of Sam Rainsy party for life. Isn't that the same thing? I thought it was small civil war rather than a coup. Both sides has weapons and shooting each others. Both sides has tanks etc. May be it is a coup attempted failed. Is it justify to kill those people? No it is not. However, in the heat of the battle, if you dont shoot them, they will shoot you. The choice is yours..What would you do? Some said, well they were unarmed, yes it is true. This is Cambodia; it nothing new. It happened when King Sihanouk in power, it happened when Lon Nol in power, it happened when KR in power and it happen when CPP in power. If you can't stand the heat, stay out from the kitchen.

It's kill or be killed world. Until you're in the same situation, you are just an analyst talking from second hand knowledge and experience.

So Warrior Blood, 1997 coup was very normal routine thing in Cambodia? Damages was done, people get killed, included the innocent. So what, it happened many times in Cambodian history, why make a big deal of this one, right? Who the fuck are you, man? If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. What the fuck do you mean by that? What the fuck are you thinking. Are you high on drug or low on life?

What I am saying is that if you play politic in Cambodia, dont be niave that it will like western style. Western style is as cut throat but non violence way, althought some time you see fist flying in the parliament too. If your opponent has guns and army too; what you going to do? Just stand there and let them take over?
The person that going into Cambodian politic and expected to be walking in the park is the one that is brain damage from smoking crack. You got to be in the dream land. "If you can stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen", mean dont play Cambodian politic if you are not for the challenges. It is very simple. You think western politics is nice walking in the park, you got to be dreaming. It is as cut throat as in Cambodia except the violence part but back door dealings etc. are the same. When the last time you running any election campaign? Exactly, NONE. I rest my case.

Warrior Blood,
It was a coup because Ranaridhh won the election and Hun sen lost the election. Hun Sen was in power because Ranariddh agreed to share power with Hun Sen because Hun Sen refused to give up power. When someone toppled an elected leader by force, it is called a coup. How can you accuse Funcinpec of launching a coup against Hun Sen? Funcinpec was the election winner and Hun sen was the loser. So, you mean the winner launched a coup against the loser? Ridiculous! If Funcinpec refused to share power, maybe UNTAC troops might force Hun Sen to give up power. Again, Hun Sen was not supposed to be in power because he lost the election. So, when the loser used force to topple the winner, it's called a coup.

Your comment that PM Hun Sen was not suppose to be in power is incorrected; He lost the election but it was a landslide lost; he has almost equally same number of seats in the parliament. He refused to step down is corrected but King Sihanouk again with his method to the madness put two tigers in the same cage. What do you think the outcome will be? Each plotting against each other; the sad part is Ranaridhh is no match to the peasant boy who knew the street life like the back of his hand. He was KR soldier and raise by Buddhist Monk when he was young because he parents cannot afford schooling. After they both agreed to rule together with Sihanouk as the parents to the bride and groom, then both sides finding ways to kill each other from power. Dont just looks at Ranaridhh as innocent in this deal. He is as guilty as any body. This why I said, it was small civil war or if you call it a coup then it was coup attemped fail. It was not a walk in a park dealing with Ranaridhh and his army. The day before the coup, Ranaridhh called PM Hun Sen ask permission to leave the country for business meeting or something then the everything broke loose the next day. Why do you think he left the country a day prior and his troops moving in Phnom Penh and fought with PM Hun Sen troops? Why he didnt mention anything to PM Hun Sen? Ranaridhh is dirty politician and he couldn't care less for others that were killed as long as he is in power. Those people that were killed, they do everything to please Ranaridhh in return, they will get better position etc. Do you know how corrupted he was when he was in power? Is that someone you want to be your leader? Not me. You can have him. This is why I said, if you play Cambodian politics, you have to better ready for the bullet flying over your head. America use to settle dispute that way too, that is why the name wild wild west came in to play. Just looks at Clint Eastwood movie.

3:30 AM, Hun Sen lost the election and Funcinpec at that time did not need his CPP to form a government. There were 120 seats in the parliament. Funcinpec won 58, Son Sann's Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party won 10, Moulinaka won 1 and the CPP won 51.
The winning party needs 2/3 to forma government. Initially, Funcinpec wanted to form a government with Son Sann and Moulinak only. They got more than 2/3 with these 3 parties forming together (169 seats out of 120 seats), but Hun sen threatened war and secession, so Sihanouk wanted to prevent war, that's why he proposed a coalition to stop Hun Sen's madness. In a real democratic country, the winner form any government it wanted, but the power-hungry loser Hun Sen refused to step down.
You said Sinahouk had put two tigers in the same cage, so in you it was a mistake to allow Hun sen to share power with Ranariddh. this indicate my point that Hun sen, as a loser, should stay as an opposition at that time. And that's why I said Hun Sen staged a coup in 1997 because he, as the loser, toppled an election winner in a violent force. Funcinpec was not the one that stage the coup because it was the winner.
