Cambodian leader Hun Sen (pictured) says the opposition election win in Thailand will improve ties between the neighbors that have fought repeated border clashes in recent months.
The party linked to toppled Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra swept weekend elections and a new government led by Thaksin's sister is poised to take power in Bangkok within weeks.
The two countries have battled over disputed land surrounding an ancient Hindu temple that straddles their common border.
Hun Sen said Wednesday the vote marked the start of "a new era of cooperation" and differences between the countries should be solved peacefully.
Thaksin is considered close to Hun Sen. He briefly was an adviser to the Cambodian government after being ousted in the 2006 military coup.

I agree with PM Hun Sen that Thai's voters voted for change and wanted to have peaceful relationship with Cambodia. However, let be mindful of many unfinished businesses such as: ICJ ruling, ASEAN preside over the negotiation of Cambodia-Thai border talks, WHC development plan, Yellow shirt extreme view, Democrate as opposition and the biggest one is the army. These some bumppy road ahead for both Thai and Khmer. The other thing is that the Thai's parliament has to approve everything when dealing with soverignity. The meetings minutes not even approved. We are not out of the wood and PT knows the challenges ahead since it newly elected; it needed to be cautious because it doesnt know the booky man waiting in the closet has for PT. PT certaintly doesnt want to rock any boat. It has to deal with amnesty of Thaksin and others. We will see what in store for Cambodia in the next couple months.
Under Abhishit Vejjajiva's rule...Many Many Thai people died and wounded including villagers...I hope new Thap Govts will heal the Southern people let them free! Otherwise, more bloods continue to spill...
correction=Just hope the New Thai Govts will resolve problem and given the Southern a freedom!!
Thai people in the South want to be free from Thailand if they can't get that, the war will not stop!
Thai military still control over the country though...
Why can Khmer surin get independent from Thai too. Why all the Khmer ancestor that live in Thia don't wanted to get free and annex to Cambodian.
Khmer surin seen grass greener than her original home..
