Former UN Chief in Cambodia said Thailand had encroached on Cambodian territory

Former UN Secretary-General’s Representative: Thailand Encroaches on Cambodia’s Territory

AKP Phnom Penh, May 26, 2011 –Former UN Secretary-General’s Representative in Cambodia Dr. Benny Widyono, who was "shadow governor" of Siem Reap province during the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) from 1991-1193, said that Thailand did encroach on Cambodian territorial integrity as he had clearly studied the history of the Preah Vihear Temple area.

In a meeting here today with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen to handover him his book entitled “Dancing in Shadows: Sihanouk, the Khmer Rouge and the United Nations in Cambodia”, Mr. Benny Widyono said he had learned a lot about Preah Vihear Temple and he will help Cambodian ambassador in New York in this matter.

In reply, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked Mr. Benny Widyono for his intention to help Cambodia in the Preah Vihear Temple issue, Ieng Sophalet, assistant to the Cambodian prime minister told reporters after the meeting.

He further detailed Mr. Benny Widyono of the Thai aggression on Cambodia and Cambodia’s measures to prevent this aggression. He also informed his guest of the country’s economy and the government’s strategy to export 1 million tons of rice by 2012.

Dr. Widyono was a peacekeeper with UNTAC from 1992 to 1993 and the political representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cambodia from 1994 to 1997.

The darkness mystery surrounding King Bhumibol

There is a darkness mystery surrounding King Bhumibol Adulyadej that goes right to the heart of modern Thailand. Why does the King of the Land of Smiles never smile on state occasions? It seems paradoxical. If The King is universally revered by the entire population of Thailand?. The most common way of referring to the King in Thai is Prachao Yu Hua--Lord above your head. In the villages, many are still too overawed even to look at him. Instead they put out handkerchiefs for him to walk on and save the scraps of cloth with his footprint in shrines at home.

Never underestimate the forces of darkness in this country, said former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun in 1996. Thailand promotes itself through its national airline as smooth as silk. But all too often the silk has been shredded, as selfish, power-hungry, cynical men have torn the national fabric to satisfy personal ambition. There are two sides to Thailand, and while foreigners mostly see only the smiling face of the country, Thais know too well about the other side.

It was the darker side that produced the right-wing vigilantes who beat and hanged students at Thammasat University in 1976. From the forces of darkness, too, came the military cabal led by General Suchinda Kraprayoon, which had dozens if not hundreds of democracy protesters gunned down on the streets of Bangkok in May 1992. Child prostitution in Bangkok brothels, rape and murder of Vietnamese boat people on the high seas, drug trafficking by cabinet ministers and corruption on a colossal scale--all come from the dark side of Thailand's complex society, where gentle Buddhism cohabits with some fearsome evil spirits. And all are known to Bhumibol, who as King must stay behind them, he's rarely to speak out against them.

Whatever the truth of the adarkness ffair, it was a brutal baptism into Thai power politics for the 18-year-old Bhumibol, who became King the same day, June 9, 1946. Since then he has been haunted by the death of his brother while occupying a throne he alway wanted.

In April 2010 video report was prepared by the Australian Broadcasting Commission or ABC. It covers Thailand’s most taboo topic, the King of Thailand and his successor Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. The video was met with outrage from the Royal Thai Embassy in Australia, who cited national security concerns Bangkokpost article after it aired on the state-funded TV station. This video is not available on the ABC NEWS website for viewing outside of Australia (i.e in Thailand).

The documentary covers from different angles the public perception of the monarchy, its role in Thailand, and its relation to Thai citizens. Past and present events are examined in order to shed light on the role and function of the monarchy within Thai society, as well as what might happen when King Bhumibol Adulyadej dies. Particular focus is given to how the government of Thailand handles dissent among its citizens and the fine line that people need to walk when openly criticizing the government or monarchy.

Suppressed video of Thai Crown Prince and Princess at Decadent Dog Party:

On September 19, 2009, the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, aged 81, was admitted to hospital. The heir apparent, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, is poorly regarded in Thailand and the succession has clouded the brows of not only the Thai political elite, but the Thai people, who believe a period of substantial instability will follow the King’s death (the King remains in hospital at the time of writing).

In Thailand, criticism of the Royal family is aggressively suppressed though the country’s lese majeste laws. Censorship in the form of criminal sanctions, internet filtering, and economic, postal and other forms of censorship are all used to prevent just criticism.
This leaked home video, commissioned to document the birthday party of the Crown Prince’s dog, shows a decadent feast in celebration of the animal. It is attended by servants and the Crown Princess, who appears naked throughout, and who appears to be expected to act in a sycophantic manner.

The video spread underground among the well connected in Thailand earlier this year at which time extracts also appeared on a couple of non-Thai file sites, all of which, as far we can determine, have now been eliminated.
