The Phnom Penh Court has announced that it will issue a verdict of the Hor Namhong vs. Sam Rainsy defamation case on 11th April.
In April 2008, opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who is now living in exile after being sentenced to 12 years jail for uprooting six border stakes in 2009, made a speech outside of the parliament alleging Mr. Hor Namhong's involvements in the Khmer Rouge genocide when he was the chief of Boeng Trobek Re-Education Centre in the 1970s. Mr. Hor Namhong sued Mr. Sam Rainsy on 17th April 2008 but dropped the suit after strong international pressures. Now, he has re-activated that suit and it is expected that Mr. Sam Rainsy would be found guilty of defamation.
Mr. Hor Namhong claimed he had won against Mr. Sam Rainsy twice in the French court. Mr. Sam Rainsy refused to let his defence lawyer, Mr. Choung Chou-Ngy, defend him in court, saying no court can try and convict a person twice for the same crime.
