Indonesian foreign minister delays trip to Cambodia, Thailand

Cambodian officials said that the Indonesian foreign minister, Dr. Marty Natalegwa (pictured) who is the Asean chair, has delayed his trip to Cambodia and Thailand to search for a peaceful solution to the ongoing Cambodian-Thai conflict which erupted in 3 consecutive days of fighting from 22-24 April.

Dr. Marty was supposed to arrive in Cambodia today for talks with Cambodian leaders before travelling to Thailand for talks with Thai leaders to finalise the agreement for the deployment of Indonesian observers along the disputed border.

Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, said Dr. Marty had informed Cambodia of the delay of his trip to the two countries without telling of the reason for the delay. Mr. Koy Kuong said he suspected that the delay was a result of the Thai opposition to his trip, who never wanted the deployment of Indonesian observers in the first place.

Diplomatic effort to end Thai-Cambodian border dispute stalls

Monsters and critics

Bangkok/Phnom Penh (DPA) - Indonesia's effort to help resolve a border clash between Thailand and Cambodia appeared to have stalled Monday, when the country's top diplomat postponed a planned visit toPhnom Penh and Bangkok.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa postponed his planned visit, Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said.

Natalegawa had been expected to sign an agreement to deploy Indonesian monitors along the Thai-Cambodian border as a step towards ending a border conflict has flared on and off for three years.

'I think that maybe Thailand does not agree to sign the terms of reference for the monitors,' Koy Kuong said.

But Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi insisted over the weekend that Bangkok has no objection to the monitors.

Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia are members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations which is attempting to play a mediating role in the border row.

The monitors would serve as neutral observers. It has been difficult to clarify in the past which side initiated the fighting.

Both sides have blamed each other for the fighting that broke out Friday near the ancient temples of Ta Kwai (Ta Krabey) and Ta Muen (Ta Moan) claimed by both sides.

Five Thai soldiers were killed and 24 injured. Some 30,000 civilians have been evacuated from their villages along the border, army spokesman Colonel Sansern Keowkamnerd said.

'The border is quiet today, but both sides are on high alert,' Sansern said.

In Phnom Penh, a senior intelligence officer told the German Press Agency dpa that one soldier had been killed Sunday night by a Thai sniper, and two others injured, bringing the total of Cambodian casualties to six dead and less than 20 injured since Friday.

Over the weekend UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. Ban said he was troubled by the recent flare-up after two months of calm, adding that the dispute could not be solved militarily.

Thai and Cambodian troops clashed in February near Preah Vihear temple, about 200 kilometres east of the location of the latest skirmish, leaving five dead.

Thailand has blamed UNESCO for escalating the tensions with its decision to list the 11th-century temple as a World Heritage Site in July 2008 despite Thai claims that a 4.6-square-kilometre area near Preah Vihear is still the subject of a border demarcation dispute.

The Hindu temple has been a bone of contention for five decades.

They will do the big push in the next day or so try to gain some territory before Indonesian come be prepare the big one is coming .
They have nothing to gain only logical sense but if they really care as the hardcore invader if thai really care about their reputation being drag through the mud as long they satisfy their ailing monarchy .

This is a joke. More than 2 months after the agreement, the Indonesian observers are still nowhere to be seen. Indonesia was given a mandate by the UNSC to solve the Khmer-Thai dispute. It must shows leadership and commitment to the agreement and if Thailand still doesn't want to honor the agreement then Indonesia should pass on the task back to the UNSC.

It is predictable anyone with a little intelligence is not surprise it is not the first time and it not the last we will see more of it we have to get use to it .
One thing for sure the war it not end anytime soon they build up their troop for the big push to gain some territory and then they allow Indonesian observers to come not bad eh .
What our premier have in mind why he so relax it is not the right time to light up the sky or the density of the Thai troop is not big enough to use the big rockets or our premier want to go for the big kill it will prevail in the next few day nothing or something really big going to happen.
We have to trust the man the man is an ex-junior soldier an the ex-commander I hope he know what he is doing.

i guess in the end, we must have faith in our leadership, regardless of his faults in the past, and for all other parties to give up most support instead of internal rifts within our geo-political structure, this is not the time for Khmer disunity.

thai is really pushing us now and always will. they complain of our military buildup, and of our modernization of the Khmer military when in fact they doing the exact opposite. we are down just a few hundred old and refurbish type-59/t-55 tanks bmp-1 ifv and btr-60. we are no match for thier more modern weapons. but our spirits r high. even though our pride may kill us, we are holding on, because this far greater cause.

No matter what, we defend ourselves, country/territories and make them Thais pay for their invasion.

What is the point? now we are ready to war. If no one helps us, we help ourselves.
But, honestly, being a civilized country like Indonesia, it is so shameful of lowing head down and lick Thai butts.

exactly, its our time now, its now or never. things are coming at a crossroads which way do we take. so much talk of peace, pitiful. the un and asean seen to have abandon us. the world have never been fair. how can improvements for Cambodia been made if we have a liar of a neighbor like Thailand. i guess most of the world are buying it. with titles like these Cambodia 'condems thai aggression'. when they talk with commas its mean to say we the poor country of cambodia have started it.evry the clash start its always 'the two sides blames each other' wht is that. while the world just sit a watch.

every country that the UN, NATO or America intervene all have strategic importance. to counter Russia, china, deny oil to future opposition. the Balkans-eastern europe, the middle-east and north Africa are all strategic assets. Iran is complete surround by neighboring US bases. And Thailand is a strategic asset of America while Cambodia is not.

why the Asean chair bowing to Thai bully? Cambodia is also an Asean state, so why doesn't Indonesia listen to Cambodia also? every time Thailand objects to something it gets its way. Asean or anyone should not reward a bully like Thailand. Or if Indonesia is incapable of mediating this conflict, then it should refer this matter back to the UNSC which gave Indonesia the mandate to mediate in the first place.

Jonny (perthkhmerguy)

here a revision of wht i say khmerization can judge.

PLEASE READ:

Thailand is about to receive assistance (help) from Indonesia regarding the Southern Insurgency in the mainly Muslim South. While Cambodia can kick the dust from our boots in the disputed area.

So the preservation of its core members more important then Cambodia's plight. Time and time again we are being delayed, lied to in front of our faces, which has been ridiculous. If this was Cambodia doing the opposite to Thailand surely, we would receive an answer as the real aggressor.

They're gonna get advisers for their southern trouble, while not one observer has even showing up at the border dispute! that's really fair, its not.

The UN useless toothless fools and tools of America, and ASEAN is turning out to be exactly the same useless joke. I guess for awhile now some of our people have second thoughts of these two useless frame-less organization.
