Publisher of Deum Ampil News Mr. Soy Sopheap has been officially charged by prosecutor Hing Bun Chea for tampering the mail and correspondences of the owner of Loran Imports/Exports Ltd., Mr. Lim Bunheang, who is an advisor to Deputy Prime Minister Bin Chhin.
Mr. Lim Bunheang sued Mr. Soy Sopheap in Phnom Penh Court in January 2011, accusing him of opening his official letters and correspondences. If convicted, Mr. Soy Sopheap could be jailed from one month to one year and fined up to $500.
Mr. Soy Sophea said he is very surprised with the court decision to charge him, but said that he still has the confidence in the judicial system. "I trust the court and in the past I used to defend the court when a number of NGOs criticised the court", he said.
Other sources said the dispute between Mr. Lim Bunheng and Mr. Soy Sopheap could stem from business dispute as both of them had cooperated in the creation of the Loran Imports/Exports company to export rice to overseas markets.
