A Cambodian official has strongly reacted to the intention of Thai border villagers who want to sue Prime Minister Hun Sen in the International Court of Justice for loss of lives and damages to their properties stemming from armed clashes from 4-7 February, calling their intention as "ignorance".
On Wednesday, the Bangkok Post reported that Thai villagers from the border village of Phum Srol in Si Sa Ket's Kantharalak district plan to file a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Prime Minister Hun Sen for 3 billion Baht (about $100 million) for damages to property and loss of lives caused by the armed clashes.
Mr. Tith Sothea (pictured), spokesman for the Press and Quick Reaction Unit, said the Thai villagers' desire to sue Mr. Hun Sen was driven by ignorance of the truth behind the origin of the Khmer-Thai conflict. "We consider their action as driven by ignorance because they did not understand the truth behind the armed clashes from 4-7 February. Those villagers should sue their own government who instigated the aggression war against Cambodia", he said.
Mr. Tith Sothea added that Thai troops had fired artillery shells at Preah Vihear temple and at thousands of Cambodian villagers who have been displaced by Thai artillery shells. So, Cambodia is the victim.
Mr. Tith Sothea said that those villagers had been fed with the wrong information because Cambodia is the victim and only used its self-defence rights to defend against the Thai invasion.
