Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodian Deputy Commander-in-Chief in charge of the Preah Vihear operations, has told Kampuchea Thmey on Monday afternoon that Cambodian and Thai military commanders had agreed to return the military situations along the borders to normalcy to ease the military tensions.

The agreement was reached during a meeting at Oknha Ly Yong Phat's hotel in O'Smach on Monday whereby both sides had agreed to open more border checkpoints along the borders near Preah Vihear temple and Ta Moan temples in Oddar Meanchey province.

The meeting attended by 20 Thai military officials and 27 Cambodian military officials. The Thai side was led by Gen. Thawatchai, Commander of the Thai Military Region Two, and Gen. Chavalit, Commander of the 6th Division. The Cambodian side was led by Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodian Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Gen. Srey Doek, Commander of the Preah Vihear Command, Gen. Chhin Chanpor and Gen. Chea Morn, Commander of Cambodian Military Region Four.

The Thai side did not set the deadline for all troop withdrawals from the Preah Vihear frontline, but promised that it will not cause any military tensions along the borders like before. The two sides made promises based on the agreements between the two prime ministers reached in meetings in New York and Brussels.

Last Tuesday, Cambodian military claimed that Thailand had withdrawn 1,000 troops from the Preah Vihear frontline, but the claims had not been verified by independent sources and the Thai side neither confirm nor deny the Cambodian claims. But, in the past, Thailand had made many promises to withdraw troops from Cambodian territory, but troop withdrawals did not eventuate as promised and 2 years after the agreements were reached, those agreements had not been ratified by the Thai parliament yet.
