Deputy governor of Thailand's Surin province has welcomed an effort to set up a Khmer language association to teach Khmer Surin people how to read and write Khmer as well as facilitating cultural exchanges between the two nations.

The unnamed deputy governor of Surin had made this remark during a face the press meeting with Khmer journalists on Wednesday afternoon. However, according to Khmer Language Advisory Committee in Surin, before setting up the Khmer Language Association to teach Khmer language to Khmer Surin children, people must get permission from the Thai government in Bangkok before they can open Khmer language classes.

The deputy governor said Surin province had good relations with other Khmer provinces, saying that 80% of stall and shop owners in Sunrin's border markets are owned by Khmers.

Recently, Mr. Moeung Sonn, a Khmer from France, in association with other Khmer Surin, had attempted to set up an association and Khmer language schools in Surin but his project had run into troubles after it was strongly opposed by Mr. Chey Mongkol, another Khmer Surin who had already established his Khmer language school in the area.
