About 100 Khmer Krom monks and Khmer Krom people have on Thursday, yesterday staged a protest against the temporary appointment of 29 year-old Ven. Khin Veasna as the new abbot of Wat Samakki Raingsey Pagoda in place of Ven. Yoeung Sin, who had passed away recently.
Mr. Thach Sang, president of Khmer Krom Friendship Association, said the reason Khmer Krom people opposed the appointment of Ven. Khin Veasna is because he is not a Khmer Krom and therefore cannot represent and serve the interests of the Khmer Krom people. "They appointed him secretly, they did not let us know about the appointment. And I have written a letter to the Ministry of Cult and Religious Affairs, signed by 10 associations", he said.
Ven. Soeung Khang, a Khmer Krom monk residing in Wat Samakki Raingsey, said the appointment of Ven. Khin Veasna had not been consulted with the Khmer Krom monks. "Because we had selected (our abbot) already, so there is no need for the (political) leaders to meddle in here", he said.
