A mixed Khmer-Thai border committee had on Thursday morning travelled to inspect border post at Phum O'Neang near Poipet to look at the possibility of opening an international economic gateway and establishing a special economic zone between the two countries at Stung Bot border point.

The Cambodian delegation was led by Mr. Sun Chanthol, chairman of Cambodian Development Council and president of Stung Bot Development Committee, and was accompanied by Mr. Tram Iv Tek, Minister of Public Works, Mr. Long Visalo, Secretary of State of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sak Setha, Secretary of State of Ministry of Interior, Mr. Oung Oeun, Governor of Banteay Meanchey province and other government officials.

Mr. Sun Chanthol had led the delegation to inspect two spots in Stung Bot area at Stung Bot border checkpoint and another one at the border checkpoint manned by Military Border Unit No. 891, also in Stung Bot.

After the inspections of the two spots, the delegation travelled to the border area to inspect the Thai-designated 'economic zone' opposite Stung Bot located in Nong Eang village, Aranh district of Sakeo province. After surveyed by GPS (Global Positioning System), the Cambodian delegation found out that the Thai 'economic zone' overlapped on Cambodian border. Mr. Sun Chanthol asked the Thai delegation to rectify their economic zone position and move it to the area opposite Stung Bot Pagoda because there is a vacant land of 6-10 hectares in total. The Thai side promised to bring the issue to the higher authority to conduct further study before making decisions.

The new border checkpoint at Stung Bot is located about 7 kilometres from the old Poipet Checkpoint. The two governments want to open Stung Bot Checkpoint as an international trade checkpoint, whereas Poipet will be used as international tourist checkpoint.
