In a two-day closed door meeting at Phnom Penh Hotel (pictured) in Phnom Penh from 27-28 October, Cambodian and Thai military leaders have reached 4 agreements, including troop withdrawals from the areas around the disputed Preah Vihear temple.

The first agreement was the creation a 5-member troop withdrawal verification committee . The second agreement was the re-adjustment of troop deployment at the disputed Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak Pagoda from 10 troops down to 5 or 2 unarmed soldiers. The third agreement is to re-open Preah Vihear temple to tourists from both countries, and the fourth agreement is to exchange information between commanders on both sides of the borders to avoid armed clashes.

Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodian Deputy Commander-in-Chief in charge of the Preah Vihear Operations, said the troop withdrawals will take place in stages, starting from the 1st of November. He said the biggest success of the meeting was the re-adjustment of troops at Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak from 10 troops down to 5 and to 2, and he hopes that all Thai troops will eventually be withdrawn from Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak Pagoda altogether. Cambodian political observers and the oppositions said this is a wishful thinking.
