Cambodian Defence Minister Gen. Tea Banh said that two military drills staged yesterday were not meant to flex Cambodia's military muscle or to threaten Cambodia's neighbours. He said they were staged to test old weaponry left from the civil war-era with new ammunitions. The drills involved firings anti-aircraft machine guns as well as long-range artillery pieces.
Yesterday, Cambodia staged two military drills, one in Pursat and one in Battambang province.
Gen. Pol Saroeun, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, also said the drills were staged to conduct tests on old weapons, left over from the Cambodian civil war in the 1980s. However, he said the weapons are still in good conditions and have hit their targets 100% during the tests.
Gen. Pov Sokha, Deputy Commander of Ground Troops, said during the drills that troops had fired 209 rounds of 37 milimetres anti-aircraft machine guns, 2354 rounds of 23 milimetres anti-aircraft machine guns, 148 rounds of 100 milimetres artillery. He added the firings had 100% hit all 95 targets.
